What Luke 24:27 means

Beginning from Moses and all the prophets, Jesus interprets in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. He is both the subject and the skilled interpreter of the Bible. The whole canon points to Him—not just a few proof texts. He weaves together the themes of sacrifice, priesthood, kingship, suffering servant, and promised deliverer, showing their fulfillment in His death and resurrection. This is the masterclass every heart needs: Christ-centered, whole-Bible reading that turns despair into delight. By grounding their faith in Scripture, Jesus ensures it will stand firm even when He vanishes from sight. The Word leads to the recognition of the Lord.

Context

Following the assertion of necessity (v. 26), verse 27 describes Jesus’ extended exposition on the road. This teaching explains why their hearts will later burn and why their eyes can be opened without reliance on physical presence alone. The flow models Luke’s larger theme, repeated in verses 44–46: the Law, Prophets, and Psalms speak of the Christ’s suffering and glory. After this Scripture lesson, the narrative will move to hospitality and table fellowship (vv. 28–31), where the moment of recognition arrives, confirming that the One explained by Scripture is the One breaking bread with them.

v.26Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?

v.27This passage

v.28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.
