1In the mean time, when the many thousands of the multitude were gathered together, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

1And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

1At that time, when thousands of the people had come together, in such numbers that they were crushing one another, he said first to his disciples, Have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees, which is deceit.

2But there is nothing covered up, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

2For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed: nor hidden that shall not be known.

2But nothing is covered up, which will not come to light, or secret, which will not be made clear.

3Wherefore whatsoever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light; and what ye have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

3For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers shall be preached on the housetops.

3So, whatever you have said in the dark, will come to men's hearing in the light, and what you have said secretly inside the house, will be made public from the house-tops.

4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

4And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.

4And I say to you, my friends, Have no fear of those who may put the body to death, and are able to do no more than that.

5But I will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

5But I will shew you whom you shall fear: Fear ye him who, after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you: Fear him.

5But I will make clear to you of whom you are to be in fear: of him who after death has power to send you to hell; yes, truly I say, Have fear of him.

6Are not five sparrows sold for two pence? and not one of them is forgotten in the sight of God.

6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

6Are not five sparrows given in exchange for two farthings? and God has every one of them in mind.

7But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

7Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.

7But even the hairs of your head are numbered. Have no fear: you are of more value than a flock of sparrows.

8And I say unto you, Every one who shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

8And I say to you: Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.

8And I say to you that to everyone who gives witness to me before men, the Son of man will give witness before the angels of God.

9but he that denieth me in the presence of men shall be denied in the presence of the angels of God.

9But he that shall deny me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

9But if anyone says before men that he has no knowledge of me, I will say that I have no knowledge of him before the angels of God.

10And every one who shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven.

10And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven.

10And if anyone says a word against the Son of man, he will have forgiveness: but for him who says evil words against the Holy Spirit, there will be no forgiveness.

11And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, be not anxious how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

11And when they shall bring you into the synagogues and to magistrates and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say.

11And when they take you before the Synagogues and the authorities and the rulers, take no thought about what answers you will give, or what you will say:

12for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say.

12For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you must say.

12For the Holy Spirit will make clear to you in that very hour what to say.

13And one out of the multitude said unto him, Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.

13And one of the multitude said to him: Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.

13And one of the people said to him, Master, give an order to my brother to make division of the heritage with me.

14But he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

14But he said to him: Man, who hath appointed me judge or divider over you?

14But he said, Man, who made me a judge or a maker of decisions for you?

15And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

15And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness: for a man's life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.

15And he said to them, Take care to keep yourselves free from the desire for property; for a man's life is not made up of the number of things which he has.

16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

16And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.

16And he said to them, in a story, The land of a certain man of great wealth was very fertile:

17and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits?

17And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

17And he said to himself, What is to be done? for I have no place in which to put all my fruit.

18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods.

18And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns and will build greater: and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me and my goods.

18And he said, This I will do: I will take down my store-houses and make greater ones, and there I will put all my grain and my goods.

19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

19And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thy rest: eat, drink, make good cheer.

19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have a great amount of goods in store, enough for a number of years; be at rest, take food and wine and be happy.

20But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

20But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee. And whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

20But God said to him, You foolish one, tonight I will take your soul from you, and who then will be the owner of all the things which you have got together?

21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.

21So that is what comes to the man who gets wealth for himself, and has not wealth in the eyes of God.

22And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.

22And he said to his disciples: Therefore I say to you: Be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on.

22And he said to his disciples, For this reason I say to you, Take no thought for your life, about what food you will take, or for your body, how it may be clothed.

23For the life is more than the food, and the body than the raiment.

23The life is more than the meat: and the body is more than the raiment.

23Is not life more than food, and the body than its clothing?

24Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap; which have no store-chamber nor barn; and God feedeth them: of how much more value are ye than the birds!

24Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they?

24Give thought to the ravens; they do not put seeds into the earth, or get together grain; they have no store-houses or buildings; and God gives them their food: of how much greater value are you than the birds!

25And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit unto the measure of his life?

25And which of you by taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

25And which of you by taking thought is able to make himself any taller?

26If then ye are not able to do even that which is least, why are ye anxious concerning the rest?

26If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest?

26If, then, you are not able to do even that which is least, why are you troubled about the rest?

27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.

27Give thought to the flowers: they do no work, they make no thread; and still I say to you, Even Solomon, in all his glory, was not clothed like one of these.

28But if God doth so clothe the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more shall he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

28Now, if God clothe in this manner the grass that is to-day in the field and to-morrow is cast into the oven: how much more you, O ye of little faith?

28But if God gives such clothing to the grass in the field, which today is living, and tomorrow will be burned in the oven, how much more will he give clothing to you, O men of little faith?

29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

29And seek not what you shall eat or what you shall drink: and be not lifted up on high.

29And do not give overmuch thought to your food and drink, and let not your mind be full of doubts.

30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

30For all these things do the nations of the world seek. But your Father knoweth that you have need of these things.

30For the nations of the world go in search of all these things: but your Father has knowledge that you have need of them.

31Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you.

31But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his justice: and all these things shall be added unto you.

31But let your chief care be for his kingdom, and these other things will be given to you in addition.

32Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

32Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom.

32Have no fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

33Sell that which ye have, and give alms; make for yourselves purses which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief draweth near, neither moth destroyeth.

33Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth.

33Give what property you have in exchange for money, and give the money to the poor; make for yourselves money-bags which will not get old, wealth stored up in heaven which will be yours for ever, where thieves will not come nor worms put it to destruction.

34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

34For where your wealth is, there will your heart be.

35Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning;

35Let your loins be girt and lamps burning in your hands.

35Be ready, dressed as for a journey, with your lights burning.

36and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him.

36And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.

36And be like men who are looking for their lord, when he comes back from the bride-feast; so that when he comes to the door, it will be open to him quickly.

37Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them.

37Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you that he will gird himself and make them sit down to meat and passing will minister unto them.

37Happy are those servants who are watching when the lord comes; truly I say to you, he will make himself their servant and, placing them at the table, he will come out and give them food.

38And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

38And if he shall come in the second watch or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants.

38And if he comes in the second division of the night or in the third, and they are watching for him, happy are those servants.

39But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

39But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open.

39But be certain of this, that if the master of the house had had knowledge of the time when the thief was coming, he would have been watching, and would not have let his house be broken into.

40Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

40Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not the Son of man will come.

40So be ready: for the Son of man is coming at a time when you are not looking for him.

41And Peter said, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all?

41And Peter said to him: Lord, dost thou speak this parable to us, or likewise to all?

41And Peter said to him, Lord, are these words said to us only, or to all men?

42And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

42And the Lord said: Who thinkest thou is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?

42And the Lord said, Who then is the wise and responsible servant whom his lord will put in control of his family, to give them their food at the right time?

43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

43Blessed is that servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.

43Happy is that servant who, when his lord comes, is doing so.

44Of a truth I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.

44Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesseth.

44Truly I say to you, he will put him in control of all his goods.

45But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

45But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:

45But if that servant says to himself, My lord is a long time coming; and goes about giving blows to the men-servants and the women-servants, feasting and taking overmuch wine;

46the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.

46The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not: and shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.

46The lord of that servant will come at a time when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not ready for him, and he will have him cut in two and will give him his part in the fate of those who have no faith;

47And that servant, who knew his lord’s will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes;

47And that servant, who knew the will of his lord and prepared not himself and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

47And the servant who had knowledge of his lord's desires and was not ready for him and did not do as he was ordered, will be given a great number of blows;

48but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask the more.

48But he that knew not and did things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.

48But he who, without knowledge, did things for which punishment is given, will get only a small number of blows. The man to whom much is given, will have to give much; if much is given into his care, of him more will be requested.

49I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what do I desire, if it is already kindled?

49I am come to cast fire on the earth. And what will I, but that it be kindled?

49I came to send a fire on the earth, and it may even now have been lighted.

50But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

50And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized. And how am I straitened until it be accomplished?

50But there is a baptism which I have to undergo; and how am I kept back till it is complete!

51Think ye that I am come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

51Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation.

51Is it your opinion that I have come to give peace on earth? I say to you, No, but division:

52for there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

52For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three.

52For from this time, a family of five in one house will be on opposite sides, three against two and two against three.

53They shall be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother in law against her daughter in law, and daughter in law against her mother in law.

53The father shall be divided against the son and the son against his father: the mother against the daughter and the daughter against her mother: the mother-in-law against the daughter-in-law and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

53They will be at war, the father against his son, and the son against his father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

54And he said to the multitudes also, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it cometh to pass.

54And he said also to the multitudes: When you see a cloud rising from the west, presently you say: A shower is coming. And so it happeneth.

54Then he said to the people, When you see a cloud coming up in the west, straight away you say, There will be rain; and so it is.

55And when ye see a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat; and it cometh to pass.

55And when ye see the south wind blow, you say: There will heat. And it cometh to pass.

55And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, There will be heat; and so it is.

56Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time?

56You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the heaven and of the earth: but how is it that you do not discern this time?

56O false ones! the face of the earth and the heaven is clear to you; how is it that the signs of these times are not as clear to you?

57And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

57And why, even of yourselves, do you not judge that which is just?

57And why are you, in your hearts, unable to be judges of what is right?

58For as thou art going with thine adversary before the magistrate, on the way give diligence to be quit of him; lest haply he drag thee unto the judge, and the judge shall deliver thee to the officer, and the officer shall cast thee into prison.

58And when thou goest with thy adversary to the prince, whilst thou art in the way, endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to he judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exacter, and the exacter cast thee into prison.

58For if anyone has a cause at law against you, and you are going with him before the ruler, make an attempt, on the way, to come to an agreement with him, for if you do not, he may take you before the judge and the judge will give you up to the police, and they will put you in prison.

59I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the very last mite.

59I say to thee, thou shalt not go out thence until thou pay the very last mite.

59I say to you, You will not come out of it till you have made payment to the very last farthing.
