What Luke 12:40 means

Jesus applies the lesson: be ready, because the Son of man comes at an hour you do not expect. The uncertainty of timing is by design, to cultivate faith, hope, and consistent obedience rather than complacency or date-setting. Readiness is moral and spiritual—living under the Lord’s gaze, faithful in vocation, reconciled and alert. The command dignifies the present, making every moment significant in light of His return. Expectancy becomes a way of life, not a calendar prediction.

Context

This climactic exhortation wraps up the initial watchfulness parable. Peter then raises a question about the audience of this teaching—whether it targets the disciples particularly or everyone. Jesus answers with another parable focusing on stewardship, clarifying what faithful readiness looks like for those entrusted with responsibility in His household.

v.39But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

v.40This passage

v.41And Peter said, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all?
