1but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

1But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives.

1And at dawn he came again to the temple,

1But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

2And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them.

2and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.

3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,

3Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation;

3and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.

4And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation.

4they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime--committing adultery,

4they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery.

5Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?

5Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it?

5and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'

5Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou?

6And this they said, trying him, that they might have whereof to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

6They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger.

6and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,

6But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground.

7But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

7But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her.

7and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you--let him first cast the stone at her;'

7But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.

8And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

8And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor.

8and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,

8And again stooping down he wrote on the ground.

9And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.

9And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him.

9and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders--unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

9But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there.

10And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?

10Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you?

10And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those--thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'

10And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee?

11And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.]

11And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.

11and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'

11And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

12Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.

12Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.

12Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'

12Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

13The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.

13So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true.

13The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'

13The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true.

14Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.

14Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going.

14Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself--my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye--ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.

14Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.

15Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

15You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man.

15`Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,

15Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.

16Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

16Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself--with me is the Father who sent me.

16and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;

16And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me.

17Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.

17Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true.

17and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;

17And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:

18I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

18I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me.

18I am <FI>one<Fi> who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'

18I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.

19They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.

19Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father.

19They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'

19They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father.

20These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.

20Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come.

20These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;

20These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come.

21He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.

21Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going.

21therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'

21He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come.

22The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?

22So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come?

22The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'

22The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come?

23And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

23And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world.

23and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;

23And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

24I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

24For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins.

24I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am <FI>he<Fi> , ye shall die in your sins.'

24I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.

25They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.

25Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first.

25They said, therefore, to him, `Thou--who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;

25They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you.

26I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.

26I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world.

26many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I--what things I heard from Him--these I say to the world.'

26I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.

27They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.

27They did not see that his words were about the Father.

27They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;

27They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father.

28Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.

28So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching.

28Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am <FI>he<Fi> ; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

28Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things.

29And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.

29He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him.

29and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'

29And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.

30As he spake these things, many believed on him.

30When he said this a number came to have faith in him.

30As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;

30As he spoke these things many believed on him.

31Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples;

31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples;

31Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

31Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;

32and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

32And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free.

32and the truth shall make you free.'

32and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

33They answered unto him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

33They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free?

33They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say--Ye shall become free?'

33They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free?

34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.

34And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin.

34Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you--Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,

34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.

35And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.

35Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does.

35and the servant doth not remain in the house--to the age, the son doth remain--to the age;

35Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever.

36If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

36If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.

36if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.

36If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.

37I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.

37I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you.

37`I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;

37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.

38I speak the things which I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from your father.

38I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house.

38I--that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father--ye do.'

38I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.

39They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

39In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did.

39They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;

39They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham;

40But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.

40But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that.

40and now, ye seek to kill me--a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;

40but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard fromGod: this did not Abraham.

41Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

41You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God.

41ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have--God;'

41Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father,God.

42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.

42Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me.

42Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;

42Jesus said to them, IfGod were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth fromGod and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but he has sent me.

43Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.

43Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching.

43wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.

43Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word.

44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

44You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false.

44`Ye are of a father--the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar--also his father.

44Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:

45But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.

45But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.

45`And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.

45and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.

46Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?

46Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me?

46Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?

46Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?

47He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.

47He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God.

47he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'

47He that is ofGod hears the words ofGod: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not ofGod.

48The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?

48The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit?

48The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'

48The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon?

49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.

49And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me.

49Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;

49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.

50But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

50I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge.

50and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;

50But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges.

51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.

51Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.

51verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see--to the age.'

51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.

52The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.

52The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.

52The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death--to the age!

52The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death.

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?

53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are?

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself?

54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;

54Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God.

54Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;

54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is ourGod.

55and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.

55You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word.

55and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you--speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;

55And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.

56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.

56Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad.

56Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'

56Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.

57The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

57Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham?

57The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'

57The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.

58Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am.

58Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming--I am;'

58Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

59So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple.

59they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

59They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]
