What John 5:37 means

“And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me.” Jesus reaches the apex of testimony: the Sender Himself attests to the Sent One. Yet He adds, “Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form,” indicting their spiritual deafness and blindness. Despite their religious status, they lack real acquaintance with God. The Father’s witness comes through Scripture, through the Son’s works, and ultimately in the Son’s person; their failure to receive Jesus proves they have not truly encountered God. This is a sobering assessment: proximity to sacred things without communion with God results in missing His clearest revelation.

Context

Having moved from John’s testimony to His works, Jesus now invokes the Father’s own witness. He immediately contrasts this with the leaders’ lack of experiential knowledge of God. This sets up verse 38, where He says God’s word does not abide in them, evidenced by their unbelief in the One sent. The argument will then proceed to the Scriptures (verses 39–47), which they search diligently yet misunderstand because they refuse to come to Jesus. The flow tightens the noose: divine witness has been abundant, but unbelief persists due to a heart estranged from God, not a shortage of revelation.

v.36But the witness which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

v.37This passage

v.38And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not.
