What 1 John 4:12 means
No one has directly seen God in His essence. Yet God makes Himself known among His people as they love one another. When believers practice love, God abides in them and His love is brought to maturity—reaching its purpose—in their lives. Love is thus both evidence and means of communion with God. This does not replace revelation in Christ; rather, it displays it. The unseen God becomes visible in the tangible care of His children. As love flows among believers, it is God’s own love completing its course from Him, through us, to others, confirming that we truly share in His life.

Context
After urging mutual love (v. 11), John shows its profound effect in verse 12: love becomes the locus of God’s abiding presence and perfecting work. This prepares for verse 13’s assurance grounded in the gift of the Spirit, balancing experiential love with divine indwelling. The flow continues to weave together objective confession, inward assurance, and outward love, showing their mutual reinforcement.
