What John 17:5 means

Having affirmed His completed work on earth, Jesus now turns His prayer to His own glorification. He asks the Father to glorify Him alongside Himself with the very same glory He possessed before the creation of the world. This is a profound request for the restoration of His pre-incarnate, divine glory, which He temporarily set aside during His earthly incarnation. It points directly to His divine nature and His return to the full unhindered expression of His deity.

Context

This verse logically progresses from Jesus' declaration of having glorified the Father to a request for His own re-glorification. It marks the conclusion of Jesus' initial focus on Himself in the prayer. This specific request for the restoration of pre-incarnate glory reinforces the earlier mention of the "hour" and foreshadows His ascension and enthronement, moving the prayer's focus from earthly accomplishment to heavenly exaltation.

v.4I glorified thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do.

v.5This passage

v.6I manifested thy name unto the men whom thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them to me; and they have kept thy word.
