John 11

1Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

1Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.

2(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)

2It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

3So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.

3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

4When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.

4But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory ofGod, that the Son ofGod may be glorified by it.

5Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.

6When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.

7Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

7Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

8The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?

8The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?

9Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.

9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;

10But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.

10but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

11These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.

11These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

12Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.

12The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well.

13Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.

13But Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep.

14Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.

14Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.

15And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.

15And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him.

16Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.

16Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.

17Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb.

18Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;

18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off,

19And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.

19and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.

20When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.

20Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.

21Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

21Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

22But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.

22but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask ofGod,God will give thee.

23Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.

23Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.

24Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.

25Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;

25Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;

26And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?

26and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.

27She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son ofGod, who should come into the world.

28And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.

28And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.

29And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.

29She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him.

30Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.

30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.

31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.

31The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there.

32When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

32Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,

33Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,

34And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.

34and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.

35And Jesus himself was weeping.

35Jesus wept.

36So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!

36The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

37But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?

37And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died?

38So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.

38Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.

39Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there].

40Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?

40Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory ofGod?

41So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.

41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;

42I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.

42but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

43And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.

44And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.

45Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.

45Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;

46But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.

46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.

47The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.

48If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.

48If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;

49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing

50You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.

50nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish.

51He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;

51But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;

52And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.

52and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children ofGod who were scattered abroad.

53And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.

53From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.

54So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.

54Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.

55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.

55But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves.

56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?

56They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast?

57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.

57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.
