What John 11:22 means

Even in grief, Martha expresses confidence that whatever Jesus asks of God, God will give. She does not presume a specific outcome, but she anchors hope in Jesus’ unique relationship with the Father. This is faith reaching beyond understanding. She trusts His intercession and leaves the form of the answer with Him. Her words open the door for Jesus to speak promise, not because of her demand, but because she has placed her confidence in His communion with God. Martha’s faith may still expect a future resurrection, yet she clings to Jesus in the present as the one through whom God acts.

Context

Martha moves from lament to affirmation, signaling readiness for Jesus’ promise. Her trust in Jesus’ access to the Father prepares for His declaration that Lazarus will rise. The next verses will show her interpreting that promise in terms of the last day, which will allow Jesus to reveal Himself as the resurrection and the life. This progression shows faith growing through conversation, from sorrow to confession to encounter with the living Lord.

v.21Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

v.22This passage

v.23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
