Hosea 13

1When Ephraim spake, there was trembling; he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

1When Ephraim speaketh tremblingly, He hath been lifted up in Israel, When he becometh guilty in Baal he dieth.

1When the words of my law came from Ephraim, he was lifted up in Israel; but when he did evil through the Baal, death overtook him.

1When Ephraim spoke, a horror seized Israel: and he sinned in Baal, and died.

2And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, even idols according to their own understanding, all of them the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

2And now do they add to sin, And make to them a molten image of their silver, By their own understanding--idols, A work of artisans--all of it, Of them they say, who <FI>are<Fi> sacrificers among men, `The calves let them kiss.'

2And now their sins are increased; they have made themselves a metal image, false gods from their silver, after their designs, all of them the work of the metal-workers; they say of them, Let them give offerings, let men give kisses to the oxen.

2And now they have sinned more and more: and they have made to themselves a molten thing of their silver as the likeness of idols: the whole is the work of craftsmen: to these that say: Sacrifice men, ye that adore calves.

3Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the dew that passeth early away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

3Therefore they are as a cloud of the morning, And as dew, rising early, going away, As chaff tossed about out of a floor, And as smoke out of a window.

3So they will be like the morning cloud, like the dew which goes early away, like the dust of the grain which the wind is driving out of the crushing-floor, like smoke going up from the fireplace.

3Therefore they shall be as a morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the dust that is driven with a whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

4Yet I am Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt; and thou shalt know no god but me, and besides me there is no saviour.

4And I <FI>am<Fi> Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt, And a God besides Me thou dost not know, And a Saviour--there is none save Me.

4But I am the Lord your God, from the land of Egypt; you have knowledge of no other God and there is no saviour but me.

4But I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt: and thou shalt know no God but me, and there is no saviour beside me.

5I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

5I--I have known thee in a wilderness, In a land of droughts.

5I had knowledge of you in the waste land where no water was.

5I knew thee in the desert, in the land of the wilderness.

6According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me.

6According to their feedings they are satiated, They have been satiated, And their heart is lifted up, Therefore they have forgotten Me,

6When I gave them food they were full, and their hearts were full of pride, and they did not keep me in mind.

6According to their pastures they were filled, and were made full: and they lifted up their heart, and have forgotten me.

7Therefore am I unto them as a lion; as a leopard will I watch by the way;

7And I am to them as a lion, As a leopard by the way I look out.

7So I will be like a lion to them; as a cruel beast I will keep watch by the road;

7And I will be to them as a lioness, as a leopard in the way of the Assyrians.

8I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart; and there will I devour them like a lioness; the wild beast shall tear them.

8I do meet them as a bereaved bear, And I rend the enclosure of their heart.

8I will come face to face with them like a bear whose young ones have been taken from her, and their inmost hearts will be broken; there the dogs will make a meal of them; they will be wounded by the beasts of the field.

8I will meet them as a bear that is robbed of her whelps, and I will rend the inner parts of their liver: and I will devour them there as a lion, the beast of the field shall tear them.

9It is thy destruction, O Israel, that thou art against me, against thy help.

9And I consume them there as a lioness, A beast of the field doth rend them.

9I have sent destruction on you, O Israel; who will be your helper?

9Destruction is thy own, O Israel: thy help is only in me.

10Where now is thy king, that he may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges, of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?

10Thou hast destroyed thyself, O Israel, But in Me <FI>is<Fi> thy help, Where <FI>is<Fi> thy king now--And he doth save thee in all thy cities? And thy judges of whom thou didst say, `Give to me a king and heads?'

10Where is your king, that he may be your saviour? and all your rulers, that they may take up your cause? of whom you said, Give me a king and rulers.

10Where is thy king? now especially let him save thee in all thy cities: and thy judges, of whom thou saidst: Give me kings and princes.

11I have given thee a king in mine anger, and have taken him away in my wrath.

11I give to thee a king in Mine anger, And I take away in My wrath.

11I have given you a king, because I was angry, and have taken him away in my wrath.

11I will give thee a king in my wrath, and will take him away in my indignation.

12The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is laid up in store.

12Bound up <FI>is<Fi> the iniquity of Ephraim, Hidden <FI>is<Fi> his sin,

12The wrongdoing of Ephraim is shut up; his sin is put away in secret.

12The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up, his sin is hidden.

13The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for it is time he should not tarry in the place of the breaking forth of children.

13Pangs of a travailing woman come to him, He <FI>is<Fi> a son not wise, For he remaineth not the time for the breaking forth of sons.

13The pains of a woman in childbirth will come on him: he is an unwise son, for at this time it is not right for him to keep his place when children come to birth.

13The sorrows of a woman in labour shall come upon him, he is an unwise son: for now he shall not stand in the breach of the children.

14I will ransom them from the power of Sheol; I will redeem them from death: O death, where are thy plagues? O Sheol, where is thy destruction? repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

14From the hand of Sheol I do ransom them, From death I redeem them, Where <FI>is<Fi> thy plague, O death? Where thy destruction, O Sheol? Repentance is hid from Mine eyes.

14I will give the price to make them free from the power of the underworld, I will be their saviour from death: O death! where are your pains? O underworld! where is your destruction? my eyes will have no pity.

14I will deliver them out of the hand of death. I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy death; O hell, I will be thy bite: comfort is hidden from my eyes.

15Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the breath of Jehovah coming up from the wilderness; and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall make spoil of the treasure of all goodly vessels.

15Though he among brethren produceth fruit, Come in doth an east wind, a wind of Jehovah, From a wilderness it is coming up, And it drieth up his fountain, And become dry doth his spring, It--it spoileth a treasure--every desirable vessel.

15Though he gives fruit among his brothers, an east wind will come, the wind of the Lord coming up from the waste land, and his spring will become dry, his fountain will be without water: it will make waste the store of all the vessels of his desire.

15Because he shall make a separation between brothers: the Lord will bring a burning wind that shall rise from the desert, and it shall dry up his springs, and shall make his fountain desolate, and he shall carry off the treasure of every desirable vessel.

16Samaria shall bear her guilt; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword; their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

16Become desolate doth Samaria, Because she hath rebelled against her God, By sword they do fall, Their sucklings are dashed in pieces, And its pregnant ones are ripped up!

16Samaria will be made waste, for she has gone against her God: they will be cut down by the sword, their little children will be broken on the rocks, their women who are with child will be cut open.
