2And in the seventh month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:

2`Speak, I pray thee, unto Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and unto Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest, and unto the remnant of the people, saying:

2Say now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, ruler of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the rest of the people,

3Speak to Zorobabel the son of Salathiel the governor of Juda, and to Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, and to the rest of the people, saying:

3Who among you hath been left that saw this house in its former honour? And what are ye seeing it now? Is it not, compared with it, as nothing in your eyes?

3Who is there still among you who saw this house in its first glory? and how do you see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing?

4Who is left among you, that saw this house in its first glory? and how do you see it now? is it not in comparison to that as nothing in your eyes?

4And now, be strong, O Zerubbabel, An affirmation of Jehovah, And be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest, And be strong, all ye people of the land, An affirmation of Jehovah, And do ye--(for I <FI>am<Fi> with you, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts) --

4But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land, says the Lord, and get to work: for I am with you, says the Lord of armies:

5Yet now take courage, O Zorobabel, saith the Lord, and take courage, Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, and take courage, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord of hosts: and perform (for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts)

5The thing that I covenanted with you, In your coming forth from Egypt, And My Spirit is remaining in your midst, fear not.

5The agreement which I made with you when you came out of Egypt, and my spirit, are with you still; have no fear.

6The word that I covenanted with you when you came out of the land of Egypt: and my spirit shall be in the midst of you: fear not.

6For thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Yet once more--it <FI>is<Fi> a little, And I am shaking the heavens and the earth, And the sea, and the dry land,

6For this is what the Lord of armies has said: In a short time I will make a shaking of the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land;

7For thus saith the Lord of hosts: Yet one little while, and I will move the heaven and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land.

7And I have shaken all the nations, And they have come <FI>to<Fi> the desire of all the nations, And I have filled this house <FI>with<Fi> honour, Said Jehovah of Hosts.

7And I will make a shaking of all the nations, and the desired things of all nations will come: and I will make this house full of my glory, says the Lord of armies.

8And I will move all nations: AND THE DESIRED OF ALL NATIONS SHALL COME: and I will fill this house with glory: saith the Lord of hosts.

8Mine <FI>is<Fi> the silver, and Mine the gold, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts.

8The silver is mine and the gold is mine, says the Lord of armies.

9The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.

9Greater is the honour of this latter house, Than of the former, said Jehovah of Hosts, And in this place do I give peace, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts.'

9The second glory of this house will be greater than the first, says the Lord of armies: and in this place I will give peace, says the Lord of armies.

10Great shall be the glory of this last house more than of the first, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place I will give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

11In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius the king, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet, saying:

11Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: `Ask, I pray thee, the priests <FI>of<Fi> the law, saying:

11These are the words of the Lord of armies: Put now a point of law to the priests, saying,

12Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Ask the priests the law, saying:

12Lo, one doth carry holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and he hath come with his skirt against the bread, or against the pottage, or against the wine, or against the oil, or against any food--is it holy?' And the priests answer and say, `No.'

12If anyone has some holy flesh folded in the skirt of his robe, will bread or soup or wine or oil or any other food be made holy if touched by his skirt? And the priests answering said, No.

13If a man carry sanctified flesh in the skirt of his garment, and touch with his skirt, bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat: shall it be sanctified? And the priests answered, and said: No.

13And Haggai saith, `If the unclean of body doth come against any of these, is it unclean?' And the priests answer and say, `It is unclean.'

13Then Haggai said, Will any of these be made unclean by the touch of one who is unclean through touching a dead body? And the priests answering said, It will be made unclean.

14And Haggai said: If one that is unclean by occasion of a soul touch any of all these things, shall it be defiled? And the priests answered, and said: It shall be defiled.

14And Haggai answereth and saith, `So <FI>is<Fi> this people, and so <FI>is<Fi> this nation before Me--an affirmation of Jehovah--and so <FI>is<Fi> every work of their hands, and that which they bring near there--it is unclean.

14Then Haggai said, So is this people and so is this nation before me, says the Lord; and so is every work of their hands; and the offering they give there is unclean.

15And Haggai answered, and said: So is this people, and so is this nation before my face, saith the Lord, and so is all the work of their hands: and all that they have offered there, shall be defiled.

15And now, lay <FI>it<Fi> , I pray you, to your heart, From this day, and onwards, Before the laying of stone to stone in the temple of Jehovah.

15And now, give thought, looking back from this day to the time before one stone was put on another in the Temple of the Lord:

16And now consider in your hearts, from this day and upward, before there was a stone laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord.

16From that time <FI>one<Fi> hath come to a heap of twenty, And it hath been ten, He hath come unto the wine-fat to draw out fifty purahs, And it hath been twenty.

16How, when anyone came to a store of twenty measures, there were only ten: when anyone went to the wine-store to get fifty vessels full, there were only twenty.

17When you went to a heap of twenty bushels, and they became ten: and you went into the press, to press out fifty vessels, and they became twenty.

17I have smitten you with blasting, And with mildew, and with hail--All the work of your hands, And there is none of you with Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.

17And I sent burning and wasting and a rain of ice-drops on all the works of your hands; but still you were not turned to me, says the Lord.

18I struck you with a blasting wind, and all the works of your hand with the mildew and with hail, yet there was none among you that returned to me, saith the Lord.

18Set <FI>it<Fi> , I pray you, to your heart, from this day and onwards, from the twenty and fourth day of the ninth <FI>month<Fi> , even from the day that the temple of Jehovah hath been founded, set <FI>it<Fi> to your heart.

18And now, give thought; looking on from this day, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the time when the base of the Lord's house was put in its place, give thought to it.

19Set your hearts from this day, and henceforward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month: from the day that the foundations of the temple of the Lord were laid, and lay it up in your hearts.

19Is the seed yet in the barn? And hitherto the vine and the fig, And the pomegranate, and the olive-tree, Have not borne--from this day I bless.'

19Is the seed still in the store-house? have the vine and the fig-tree, the pomegranate and the olive-tree, still not given their fruit? from this day I will send my blessing on you.

20Is the seed as yet sprung up? or hath the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree as yet flourished? from this day I will bless you.

22Speak to Zorobabel the governor of Juda, saying: I will move both heaven and earth.

22And have overturned the throne of kingdoms, And I have destroyed the strength of kingdoms of the nations, And overturned chariot and its charioteers, And come down have horses and their riders, Each by the sword of his brother.

22Overturning the power of kingdoms; and I will send destruction on the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; by me war-carriages will be overturned with those who are in them; and the horses and the horsemen will come down, everyone by the sword of his brother.

23And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and will destroy the strength of the kingdom of the Gentiles: and I will overthrow the chariot, and him that rideth therein: and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

23In that day--an affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, I take thee, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant--an affirmation of Jehovah, And have set thee as a signet, for on thee I have fixed, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts!

23In that day, says the Lord of armies, I will take you, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, says the Lord, and will make you as a jewelled ring: for I have taken you to be mine, says the Lord of armies.

24In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, I will take thee, O Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, my servant, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet, for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.
