What Haggai 2:10 means
A new word comes on the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, still in Darius’s second year. The precise date marks a turn from encouragement to correction and promise of blessing. This is late autumn, when fields lie bare and hopes for harvest are tested. God times His instruction to intersect with agricultural realities the people can feel. Having addressed their discouragement in the first oracle, He now probes the moral and ritual condition of their work. The God who promised future glory also cares about present holiness. He speaks again through Haggai, showing that renewal is sustained by ongoing attention to His word.

Context
This timestamp introduces the second oracle (verses 10–19). The change of month and tone signals a new focus: an object lesson through priestly teaching about holiness and impurity. Verses 11–13 will pose two legal questions. Verse 14 will apply their answers to the community’s defilement. Then verses 15–19 will call the people to reflect on past hardship and promise a turning point in blessing. The careful dating also links the promise of blessing to a specific day, helping the reader trace God’s faithfulness in time. The first oracle looked forward to glory; this one explains why blessing had been withheld and how it will begin.
