What Haggai 2:18 means
Again Haggai says, Consider—from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day the foundation of Jehovah’s temple was laid—consider. The repeated call marks a decisive hinge. They are to fix this day in memory as the moment of fresh obedience, when the foundation was set in earnest. Reflection now looks forward: not to mourn past lack, but to anticipate God’s pledged favor. By tying blessing to a date, God helps their faith. When later abundance comes, they may trace it to His promise, not to chance. The spiritual calendar matters; obedience in time meets grace in time.

Context
This verse bridges the review of past discipline (verses 15–17) and the promise of future blessing (verse 19). The careful dating connects the promise to a concrete moment, encouraging accountability and expectation. It also resonates with the chapter’s early dating in verse 10, showing continued progress. The next verse will state the promise plainly: though nothing yet shows in seed or tree, God will bless from this day forward. The flow moves from memory to marker to mercy, teaching Israel to read God’s dealings across seasons.
v.17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith Jehovah.
v.18This passage
v.19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree have not brought forth; from this day will I bless you.
