1In the seventhmonth, in the one and twentiethdayof the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,

1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai.

2Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

2He said, 'Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the rest of the people. Ask them:

3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing?

3Is there anyone left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem like nothing in comparison?

4Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith Jehovah; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith Jehovah, and work: for I am with you, saith Jehovah of hosts,

4But now be strong, Zerubbabel, says the LORD. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, says the LORD, and get to work. For I am with you, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

5according to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, and my Spirit abode among you: fear ye not.

5This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit remains among you. Do not be afraid.

6For thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

6For this is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: In just a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.

7and I will shake all nations; and the precious things of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, saith Jehovah of hosts.

7I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all nations will come here. I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith Jehovah of hosts.

8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

9The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts.

9The future glory of this temple will be greater than its past glory, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. And in this place I will bring peace, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.'

10In the four and twentiethdayof the ninthmonth, in the second year of Darius, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,

10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of King Darius, the LORD spoke to the prophet Haggai.

11Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

11The LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: 'Go and ask the priests for a ruling on the law.

12If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any food, shall it become holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

12If someone carries holy meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread, stew, wine, olive oil, or any other food, does that food become holy?' The priests answered, 'No.'

13Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

13Then Haggai asked, 'If someone who is ceremonially unclean because they touched a dead body touches any of these things, does the food become unclean?' The priests answered, 'Yes, it becomes unclean.'

14Then answered Haggai and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith Jehovah; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

14Then Haggai said, 'That is how it is with this people and this nation in my sight, says the LORD. Everything they do and whatever they offer there is unclean.

15And now, I pray you, consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of Jehovah.

15Now, think carefully about this from this day forward. Think about how things were before you began laying stones on the foundation of the LORD's temple.

16Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten; when one came to the winevat to draw out fifty vessels, there were but twenty.

16Back then, when someone went to a grain pile expecting twenty measures, there were only ten. When someone went to the wine press to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.

17I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith Jehovah.

17I struck all the work of your hands with scorching winds, mildew, and hail, yet you did not turn back to me, says the LORD.

18Consider, I pray you, from this day and backward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of Jehovah’s temple was laid, consider it.

18Think carefully from this day toward the future—from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid. Think about it:

19Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree have not brought forth; from this day will I bless you.

19Is there any seed left in the barn? The grapevine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not produced fruit yet. But from this day on, I will bless you.'

20And the word of Jehovah came the second time unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,

20The LORD spoke a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month.

21Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

21'Tell Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.

22and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

22I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of foreign kingdoms. I will overturn chariots and their riders; the horses and their riders will fall, each one killed by the sword of his own brother.

23In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith Jehovah, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith Jehovah of hosts.

23On that day, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, says the LORD. I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.'
