What Galatians 1:5 means

Paul answers the saving work of God with worship: “to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.” The purpose of the Gospel is the glory of God. When Christ gives himself for our sins and rescues us from the present evil age, the right response is everlasting praise to the Father whose will planned and accomplished it. This doxology also signals that any teaching which shifts credit to human effort robs God of glory. The Gospel preserves God’s glory by attributing salvation wholly to his initiative and Christ’s work, so that boasting is excluded and thanksgiving becomes the fitting language of the redeemed.

Context

This brief doxology concludes the opening salutation that highlighted grace, peace, and Christ’s atoning work. It forms a hinge: from praise to alarm. Immediately, Paul expresses astonishment at the Galatians’ swift defection to a different gospel (verse 6). The praise of God’s glory heightens the seriousness of the coming rebuke—turning to a distorted message not only endangers souls; it diminishes the glory due to God for his redeeming work in Christ.
