What Ephesians 6:15 means

Believers are to have their feet shod with the readiness given by the gospel of peace. The image suggests traction and mobility—shoes that keep a soldier sure-footed. The gospel brings peace with God through Christ, calming the heart and steadying the steps. From that peace flows readiness: availability for service, courage to advance, and stability under pressure. The good news does not make us passive; it equips us to move wisely and to stand firm when pressed. When the conscience is at peace through the gospel, fear loses footing. The believer’s stance in conflict is not frantic but prepared, grounded in the reconciling work God has accomplished.

Context

After truth and righteousness (v. 14), verse 15 introduces footwear imagery tied to the gospel’s peace and the readiness it produces. This continues the theme of stability and preparedness. In verse 16, Paul will add the shield of faith to quench the evil one’s fiery darts, and in verse 17 he will mention the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, rounding out the armor with faith, hope, and God’s word.

v.14Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

v.15This passage

v.16withal taking up the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
