שְׁלֹמֹה
(she-lo-MOH)
proper noun
Solomon was the son of David and Bathsheba who succeeded David as king of Israel, reigning for forty years.
Solomon was the third king of Israel and is renowned for his wisdom, wealth, and extensive building projects. His reign is often considered a golden age for Israel, marked by peace and prosperity. He was chosen by God to build the first temple in Jerusalem, a task his father David had desired but was not permitted to undertake. Solomon’s early reign was characterized by devotion to God and a famous prayer for wisdom, which God granted him in abundance. He rendered judgments with great insight and his fame spread throughout the ancient world, attracting dignitaries like the Queen of Sheba.
Despite his wise beginning, Solomon’s later years were marred by disobedience. He accumulated many horses and chariots, amassed great wealth, and took numerous foreign wives, all of which were contrary to the Mosaic Law concerning kings. These foreign wives influenced him to worship their gods, leading him away from the Lord. As a consequence, God announced that the kingdom would be divided after his death, although not during his lifetime for the sake of David his father.
Solomon is also traditionally associated with several books of the Bible, including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon, due to the superscriptions attributed to him and the wisdom themes contained within. His life serves as a complex example of both great fidelity and profound spiritual decline, illustrating the dangers of prosperity and the importance of remaining steadfast in faith.
