רְאוּבֵן
(reh-oo-BANE)
proper noun
Reuben is the name of Jacob’s firstborn son, born to Leah, and also refers to the tribe descended from him.
Reuben, meaning "behold, a son," was the firstborn of Jacob and Leah (Genesis 29:32). His birth narrative highlights Leah’s hope for her husband’s affection. However, Reuben later forfeited his birthright due to his illicit relationship with Bilhah, Jacob’s concubine (Genesis 35:22, 49:3-4). Despite this, he often tried to protect his younger brothers, as seen in his attempt to save Joseph from his siblings’ plot (Genesis 37:21-22). The tribe of Reuben was one of the twelve tribes of Israel. During the exodus from Egypt, the Reubenites were counted among the largest tribes (Numbers 1:20-21). They encamped on the south side of the tabernacle. Later, when the Israelites were preparing to enter the promised land, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half the tribe of Manasseh, requested land on the east side of the Jordan River because it was suitable for their livestock (Numbers 32:1-5). Moses granted their request on the condition that their warriors would cross over and help conquer the land on the west side of the Jordan. They fulfilled this obligation (Joshua 4:12, 22:1-4). However, their decision to settle outside the main tribal inheritance later caused some tension and misunderstanding, as evidenced by the incident with the altar they built by the Jordan (Joshua 22:10-34). Despite its prominent position as the firstborn tribe, Reuben did not achieve the same level of prominence or blessing as some of the other tribes, particularly Judah, from which the messianic line descended.
