קוֹמָה

The Hebrew noun קוֹמָה (qomah) primarily denotes "height" or "stature." It can describe the physical dimension of inanimate objects, such as the height of the temple or its furnishings (1 Kings 6:2). In these contexts, it is a straightforward measurement of vertical extent. The word also applies to vegetation, indicating the height of trees or vines, which can sometimes carry symbolic weight about growth and prominence (Ezekiel 17:6, 19:11). For instance, a "spreading vine of low stature" might imply humility or lack of prominence, while an "exalted stature" could refer to majesty. In some cases, it can refer to the physical stature of people, as seen in the Song of Solomon (7:7), where a beloved's stature is compared to a palm tree, which is a plant known for its stately height. This indicates a positive aesthetic quality. The semantic range of קוֹמָה is largely restricted to literal physical height, whether of buildings, plants, or individuals. However, its use in poetic and prophetic literature can imbue it with metaphorical significance related to status, power, or even pride, as when "high ones of stature" are threatened with being "hewn down" (Isaiah 10:33). Yet, this metaphorical extension derives directly from the literal sense of physical elevation and prominence. It is also used to describe the extent or "tallness" of things. Throughout the Hebrew Bible, קוֹמָה consistently refers to a vertical measurement, providing a concrete image of elevation.
