חִזְקִיָּה

(khiz-kee-YAW)

proper noun

Hezekiah was a king of Judah, attested in both the history and prophecy books of the Hebrew Bible.

The Hebrew proper name Hezekiah, meaning "Yahweh strengthens," is primarily associated with the 13th king of Judah, who reigned in Jerusalem for 29 years (c. 715–686 BC). He is generally regarded as one of Judah's most righteous kings, known for his extensive religious reforms and his trust in the Lord amidst Assyrian aggression. His story is extensively recounted in 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, and Isaiah, where he is portrayed as a pivotal figure in Judah's history. Hezekiah's reign was marked by significant political and religious challenges, yet he consistently sought guidance and deliverance from God. Throughout his reign, Hezekiah demonstrated a strong commitment to purifying the worship of Yahweh. He removed pagan altars and high places, broke down cultic pillars, cut down Asherah poles, and even destroyed the bronze serpent Moses had made, which had become an object of idolatry. These reforms reflect his dedication to restoring proper worship and obedience to the Mosaic Law within Judah. Another prominent aspect of Hezekiah’s reign was his response to the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem. Faced with the formidable power of Sennacherib, king of Assyria, Hezekiah refused to surrender, instead turning to the prophet Isaiah and earnestly praying to the Lord for deliverance. His faith was vindicated when God miraculously intervened, destroying the Assyrian army and saving Jerusalem. This event underscored Hezekiah's reliance on divine power rather than human strength or political alliances.
