חוּל

The Hebrew verb חוּל (khool) carries a core meaning of twisting or whirling, which gives rise to a wide semantic range in its biblical usage. This physical action often describes intense physical distress, most notably the pain of childbirth. The imagery of writhing in pain is a prominent theme, used not only for actual parturition but also metaphorically for severe anguish, fear, or great trouble, such as the trembling of the earth at God's presence.

Beyond the literal and metaphorical expressions of pain, חוּל can also describe a bringing forth or forming, like the earth being formed, or hinds calving. The idea of twisting or turning can also be extended to waiting or tarrying, suggesting a circling motion or patient endurance.
