What does the Bible say about humility?
Humility is one of scripture's most counter-cultural virtues. The Bible promises that God 'opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Jesus models it: kneeling to wash feet, refusing the political crown, accepting the cross. Humility in scripture is not low self-esteem — it is honest self-assessment that frees you to serve.
He must increase, but I must decrease.
Bible verses about humility
"doing nothing through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself; not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others."
"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble."
"The reward of humility and the fear of Jehovah Isriches, and honor, and life."
"He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
"Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;"
"And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted."
