גִּלְגָּל

(GHIL-gahl)

proper noun

Gilgal was the name given to several places in ancient Israel, most notably the initial encampment of the Israelites after crossing the Jordan river.

The Hebrew term Gilgal refers to a place name, meaning "circle" or "rolling." The most prominent Gilgal in the Old Testament was the first encampment of the Israelites after miraculously crossing the Jordan River into the promised land. It was here that the LORD rolled away the reproach of Egypt from His people. This location served as a significant base of operations for Joshua during the conquest of Canaan, and it was a place of assembly for the tribes of Israel.

Gilgal held considerable spiritual and political importance. It was the site where the Israelite males were circumcised as a reaffirmation of the covenant with God. Later, it became a frequent gathering place for Samuel, who judged Israel there. It was also at Gilgal that Saul was formally crowned as the first king of Israel, signifying national unity and divine sanction. However, Gilgal also witnessed Saul's disobedience when he offered a sacrifice in Samuel's absence, leading to God's rejection of his kingship.

While the primary Gilgal is associated with the Joshua and Judges narratives and the early monarchy, other locations also bore this name. These different Gilgals may have served as cultic sites or places of communal gathering. The repeated appearance of the name suggests its significance, perhaps related to circular stone monuments or the rolling action of a river, though the specific etymology is strongly linked to the 'rolling away' of reproach in Joshua 5. The various Gilgals represent points of historical and religious importance in ancient Israel.
