καθίζω

kathízō (ka-THEE-zoh)

verb

To καθίζω means to sit down, to cause to sit, or to settle, often denoting an established position or authority.

The Greek verb καθίζω carries a range of meanings related to sitting or being seated. Its primary sense is "to sit down" or "to be seated," describing a physical posture. This can be either intransitive, where the subject sits themselves down, or transitive, where the subject causes someone or something else to sit. For example, Jesus "sat" at the treasury in Mark 12:41, observing people putting in offerings. In a more active sense, he "set" or "appointed" those to judge in 1 Corinthians 6:4.

Beyond the literal act of sitting, καθίζω frequently conveys the idea of taking a permanent or authoritative position. This is evident in passages where individuals "sit" on a throne, which signifies ruling or reigning, such as Herod in Acts 12:21. The most significant theological use of καθίζω in this regard is its application to Jesus Christ, who, after his ascension, "sat down at the right hand of God" (Mark 16:19). This imagery powerfully conveys his exalted status, completed work of redemption, and sovereign rule over all creation. Similarly, in Revelation 3:21, the promise to the overcomer to "sit" with Christ on his throne emphasizes sharing in his victory and reign.

The term can also imply a settling or dwelling in a particular place for an extended period, as seen in Acts 18:11, where Paul "continued" for a year and six months. Another figurative meaning highlights a position of teaching or judgment, as in Matthew 23:2, where the Pharisees "sit in Moses' seat," signifying their claim to authority in interpreting the law. The semantic range of καθίζω thus moves from simple physical posture to profound theological statements about authority, reign, and divine appointment, particularly in eschatological contexts.
