1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,
1I am Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am sent to help God’s chosen people have faith and to show them the truth that leads to a godly life.
2in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;
2This faith and knowledge rest on the hope of eternal life. God, who does not lie, promised this life before the world even began.
3but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
3Now, at just the right time, he has revealed his word through the preaching that was trusted to me by the command of God our Savior.
4to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
4I am writing to Titus, my true son in the faith we share. May grace and peace be with you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
5For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;
5The reason I left you on the island of Crete was so you could finish the work that remained and appoint elders in every town, just as I told you to do.
6if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.
6An elder must be a man of good reputation. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who are not known for being wild or rebellious.
7For the bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;
7A church leader is a manager of God’s household, so he must be blameless. He must not be arrogant, quick-tempered, a heavy drinker, violent, or greedy for money.
8but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;
8Instead, he must be friendly to strangers, a lover of what is good, sensible, fair, holy, and self-controlled.
9holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.
9He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it was taught. Then he will be able to encourage others with correct teaching and show those who argue against it where they are wrong.
10For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,
10There are many rebellious people who talk nonsense and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on the necessity of circumcision.走向
11whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
11They must be silenced because they are ruining entire families by teaching things they shouldn’t, all just to make money dishonestly.
12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.
12Even one of their own prophets said, 'Cretans are always liars, evil animals, and lazy gluttons.'
13This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
13What he said is true. So, correct them sternly so that they will be strong and healthy in their faith.走向
14not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
14They must stop paying attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth.
15To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
15Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But to those who are corrupt and do not believe, nothing is pure; their very minds and consciences are stained.
