What Ruth 4:22 means

Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. The book ends at its high point: the birth of a royal line. David, Israel’s beloved king, springs from the gracious union of Boaz and Ruth. This final note shows that God can take a Moabite widow, a Bethlehem farmer, and a grieving mother and weave from their faithfulness a future for a nation. The New Testament further reveals that from David’s line comes Jesus the Christ, so Ruth’s story is a vital link in God’s saving plan. Humble obedience becomes the path by which the King and Redeemer would one day come.

Context

The genealogy resolves in David’s name, fulfilling the thematic hints in the blessings and in the naming of Obed. This conclusion elevates the whole story from a family’s restoration to a nation’s hope, and sets the stage for later Scriptures that develop God’s covenant with David. The chapter, and the book, thus close by connecting private redemption to public, royal, and ultimately messianic purposes in God’s providence.
