What Romans 16:14 means
Paul greets Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers with them. The cluster suggests a house-church or fellowship group. Though we know little about them, being named in Scripture affirms their importance to God and to Paul. The gospel did not create a single, centralized congregation in Rome; it formed many gatherings that together comprised the church. This verse shows how ordinary believers, gathered in small communities, were vital to the life of the body. Their shared identity as brothers reflects a deep, Spirit-made unity across backgrounds and social standings.

Context
Continuing the greetings, Paul now addresses a group along with the brothers associated with them, likely a local assembly. The pattern repeats in verse 15 with another set of names and “all the saints” with them. These groupings culminate in verse 16’s instruction to share a holy kiss, symbolizing unity across these diverse clusters. After affirming unity, Paul will immediately warn against those who fracture it through false teaching and divisive behavior.
