Before heading west, Paul must go to Jerusalem to serve the saints there. He is carrying a financial gift gathered from Gentile churches for the poor among the believers in Jerusalem. This trip is an act of love and a tangible expression of unity between Gentiles and Jews. The gospel not only unites in worship; it unites wallets and schedules. Paul’s apostolic heart holds together mercy ministry and mission advance, honoring the needs of the mother church while planning to reach new lands.

Context

After expressing his hope to visit Rome en route to Spain (v.24), Paul states his immediate task (v.25): ministering to the saints in Jerusalem. Verses 26–27 will explain the origin and rationale of the collection from Macedonia and Achaia. Then verses 28–29 will return to his resumed plan toward Spain via Rome. This interlude highlights the practical love that cements Jew-Gentile unity.

v.24whensoever I go unto Spain (for I hope to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first in some measure I shall have been satisfied with your company)—

v.25This passage

v.26For it hath been the good pleasure of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints that are at Jerusalem.
