Revelation 11

1And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and one said, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.

1Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and someone told me, 'Get up and measure the temple of God, the altar, and the people worshiping there.'

2And the court which is without the temple leave without, and measure it not; for it hath been given unto the nations: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

2'But don’t measure the courtyard outside the temple; leave it out. It has been handed over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.'

3And I will give unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

3'I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will preach for 1,260 days, wearing rough clothes made of sackcloth.'

4These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks, standing before the Lord of the earth.

4These witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.

5And if any man desireth to hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies; and if any man shall desire to hurt them, in this manner must he be killed.

5If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and destroys their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to hurt them must die.

6These have the power to shut the heaven, that it rain not during the days of their prophecy: and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to smite the earth with every plague, as often as they shall desire.

6They have the power to shut the sky so that it doesn’t rain while they are prophesying. They also have power to turn water into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

7And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that cometh up out of the abyss shall make war with them, and overcome them, and kill them.

7When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the bottomless pit will declare war on them, defeat them, and kill them.

8And their dead bodies lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

8Their dead bodies will lie in the main street of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, the same place where their Lord was crucified.

9And from among the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations do men look upon their dead bodies three days and a half, and suffer not their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.

9For three and a half days, people from every tribe, nation, language, and race will look at their bodies and will not let them be buried in a tomb.

10And they that dwell on the earth rejoice over them, and make merry; and they shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwell on the earth.

10The people living on the earth will celebrate over their death, be happy, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets had brought so much suffering to those on the earth.

11And after the three days and a half the breath of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them that beheld them.

11But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up. Everyone who saw them was filled with great terror.

12And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they went up into heaven in the cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

12Then the witnesses heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, 'Come up here!' And they went up to heaven in a cloud while their enemies watched them.

13And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell; and there were killed in the earthquake seven thousand persons: and the rest were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

13At that same moment, there was a violent earthquake. A tenth of the city collapsed, and 7,000 people were killed in the earthquake. The survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14The second Woe is past: behold, the third Woe cometh quickly.

14The second woe is over, but listen, the third woe is coming quickly.

15And the seventh angel sounded; and there followed great voices in heaven, and they said, The kingdom of the world is becomethe kingdomof our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever.

15Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying, 'The kingdom of the world now belongs to our Lord and to his Christ, and he will rule forever and ever!'

16And the four and twenty elders, who sit before God on their thrones, fell upon their faces and worshipped God,

16The twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, bowed down with their faces to the ground and worshiped God.

17saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and who wast; because thou hast taken thy great power, and didst reign.

17They said, 'We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the one who is and who was, because you have used your great power and have begun to rule.'

18And the nations were wroth, and thy wrath came, and the time of the dead to be judged, and the time to give their reward to thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and to them that fear thy name, the small and the great; and to destroy them that destroy the earth.

18'The nations were angry, and now the time for your anger has come. It is time for the dead to be judged and for you to reward your servants the prophets, your holy people, and all who honor your name, whether they are unimportant or great. It is also time to destroy those who destroy the earth.'

19And there was opened the temple of God that is in heaven; and there was seen in his temple the ark of his covenant; and there followed lightnings, and voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

19Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the chest containing his covenant could be seen inside. There were flashes of lightning, loud noises, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a massive hailstorm.
