1Jehovah is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? Jehovah is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
1The LORD is my light and the one who saves me—so why should I be afraid? The LORD is the fortress of my life—so why should I tremble?
2When evil-doers came upon me to eat up my flesh, Even mine adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.
2When evil people come to destroy me, and when my enemies and foes attack me, they are the ones who stumble and fall.
3Though a host should encamp against me, My heart shall not fear: Though war should rise against me, Even then will I be confident.
3Even if a whole army surrounds me, I will not be afraid. Even if war breaks out against me, I will still trust God.
4One thing have I asked of Jehovah, that will I seek after: That I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of Jehovah, And to inquire in his temple.
4The one thing I ask from the LORD—the thing I want most—is to live in the house of the LORD every day of my life, to see the LORD’s beauty and to pray in his Temple.
5For in the day of trouble he will keep me secretly in his pavilion: In the covert of his tabernacle will he hide me; He will lift me up upon a rock.
5For he will hide me in his shelter when trouble comes. He will keep me safe in his private tent and set me high on a rock where no one can reach me.
6And now shall my head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me; And I will offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto Jehovah.
6Then I will hold my head high above the enemies who surround me. At his tent I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.
7Hear, O Jehovah, when I cry with my voice: Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
7Listen to my voice, LORD, when I call out to you. Be merciful to me and answer me!
8When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Jehovah, will I seek.
8My heart heard you say, 'Come and talk with me.' And my heart responds, 'LORD, I am coming to see you.'
9Hide not thy face from me; Put not thy servant away in anger: Thou hast been my help; Cast me not off, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
9Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger; you have always been my helper. Do not leave me or abandon me, O God who saves me.
10When my father and my mother forsake me, Then Jehovah will take me up.
10Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will take care of me.
11Teach me thy way, O Jehovah; And lead me in a plain path, Because of mine enemies.
11Teach me your way, LORD. Lead me on a safe, level path because my enemies are waiting for me.
12Deliver me not over unto the will of mine adversaries: For false witnesses are risen up against me, And such as breathe out cruelty.
12Do not let my enemies have their way with me. For they have hired liars to testify against me, and they breathe out violence.
