1To the Overseer, on `The Hind of the Morning.' --A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Far from my salvation, The words of my roaring?

1 My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my crying?

1A psalm for David. The Lord ruleth me: and I shall want nothing.

2My God, I call by day, and Thou answerest not, And by night, and there is no silence to me.

2O my God, I make my cry in the day, and you give no answer; and in the night, and have no rest.

2He hath set me in a place of pasture. He hath brought me up, on the water of refreshment:

3And Thou <FI>art<Fi> holy, Sitting--the Praise of Israel.

3But you are holy, O you who are seated among the praises of Israel.

3He hath converted my soul. He hath led me on the paths of justice, for his own name's sake.

4In Thee did our fathers trust--they trusted, And Thou dost deliver them.

4Our fathers had faith in you: they had faith and you were their saviour.

4For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they have comforted me.

5Unto Thee they cried, and were delivered, In Thee they trusted, and were not ashamed.

5They sent up their cry to you and were made free: they put their faith in you and were not put to shame.

5Thou hast prepared a table before me against them that afflict me. Thou hast anointed my head with oil; and my chalice which inebreateth me, how goodly is it!

6And I <FI>am<Fi> a worm, and no man, A reproach of man, and despised of the people.

6But I am a worm and not a man; cursed by men, and looked down on by the people.

6And thy mercy will follow me all the days of my life. And that I may dwell in the house of the Lord unto length of days.

7All beholding me do mock at me, They make free with the lip--shake the head,

7I am laughed at by all those who see me: pushing out their lips and shaking their heads they say,

9For thou <FI>art<Fi> He bringing me forth from the womb, Causing me to trust, On the breasts of my mother.

9But it was you who took care of me from the day of my birth: you gave me faith even from my mother's breasts.

9(not in this translation)

10On Thee I have been cast from the womb, From the belly of my mother Thou <FI>art<Fi> my God.
