1My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou sofar from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?
1My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away from saving me and from my cries of pain?
2O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answerest not; And in the night season, and am not silent.
2My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer; I cry out through the night and find no rest.
3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
3Yet you are holy, sitting on your throne as the one Israel praises.
4Our fathers trusted in thee: They trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
4Our ancestors put their trust in you; they trusted you, and you rescued them.
5They cried unto thee, and were delivered: They trusted in thee, and were not put to shame.
5They cried out to you and were saved; they trusted in you and were never disappointed.
6But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised of the people.
6But I am like a worm, not a man; people insult me and everyone despises me.
7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
7Everyone who sees me mocks me; they stick out their tongues and shake their heads at me.
8Commit thyself unto Jehovah; let him deliver him: Let him rescue him, seeing he delighteth in him.
8They say, 'He relies on the LORD; let the LORD save him. Let the LORD rescue him, since he delights in him.'
9But thou art he that took me out of the womb; Thou didst make me trust when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
9Yet you are the one who brought me safely out of the womb; you made me feel secure at my mother’s breast.
10I was cast upon thee from the womb; Thou art my God since my mother bare me.
10I have depended on you since my birth; you have been my God from the moment I was born.
11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; For there is none to help.
11Do not stay far away from me, because trouble is near and there is no one else to help.
12Many bulls have compassed me; Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
12Many enemies surround me like bulls; strong bulls from Bashan hem me in.
13They gape upon me with their mouth, Asa ravening and a roaring lion.
13They open their mouths wide against me like lions that tear their prey and roar.
14I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; It is melted within me.
14My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away inside me.
15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; And thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
15My strength is dried up like a piece of broken pottery, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you have laid me in the dust of death.
16For dogs have compassed me: A company of evil-doers have inclosed me; They pierced my hands and my feet.
16A pack of dogs surrounds me; a gang of evil men has closed in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet.
17I may count all my bones. They look and stare upon me;
17I can count every one of my bones; my enemies stare and gloat over me.
18They part my garments among them, And upon my vesture do they cast lots.
18They divide my clothes among themselves and throw dice for my garment.
19But be not thou far off, O Jehovah: O thou my succor, haste thee to help me.
19But you, LORD, do not stay far away; you are my strength, hurry to help me!
20Deliver my soul from the sword, My darling from the power of the dog.
20Save my life from the sword; save my precious life from the power of these dogs.
21Save me from the lion’s mouth; Yea, from the horns of the wild-oxen thou hast answered me.
21Rescue me from the mouth of the lion; you have heard me and saved me from the horns of the wild oxen.
22I will declare thy name unto my brethren: In the midst of the assembly will I praise thee.
22I will tell my brothers and sisters about your name; I will praise you in the middle of the assembly.
23Ye that fear Jehovah, praise him; All ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; And stand in awe of him, all ye the seed of Israel.
23You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel!
24For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Neither hath he hid his face from him; But when he cried unto him, he heard.
24For he has not ignored or looked down on the suffering of the needy. He has not hidden his face from them, but he listened when they cried out for help.
25Of thee cometh my praise in the great assembly: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
25Because of what you have done, I will praise you in the great assembly; I will fulfill my promises in the presence of those who worship you.
26The meek shall eat and be satisfied; They shall praise Jehovah that seek after him: Let your heart live for ever.
26The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him. May your hearts live forever!
27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto Jehovah; And all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
27People from the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD; all the families of the nations will bow down before you.
28For the kingdom is Jehovah’s; And he is the ruler over the nations.
28For the kingdom belongs to the LORD, and he rules over all the nations.
29All the fat ones of the earth shall eat and worship: All they that go down to the dust shall bow before him, Even he that cannot keep his soul alive.
29All the wealthy of the earth will feast and worship; everyone who is headed for the grave will bow before him—even those who cannot keep themselves alive.
