1 My eyes are lifted up to the hills: O where will my help come from?

1A gradual canticle. I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: We shall go into the house of the Lord.

2Your help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

2Our feet were standing in thy courts, O Jerusalem.

3May he not let your foot be moved: no need of sleep has he who keeps you.

3Jerusalem, which is built as a city, which is compact together.

4See, the eyes of Israel's keeper will not be shut in sleep.

4For thither did the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: the testimony of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord.

5The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.

5Because their seats have sat in judgment, seats upon the house of David.

6You will not be touched by the sun in the day, or by the moon at night.

6Pray ye for the things that are for the peace of Jerusalem: and abundance for them that love thee.

7The Lord will keep you safe from all evil; he will take care of your soul.

7Let peace be in thy strength: and abundance in thy towers.

8The Lord will keep watch over your going out and your coming in, from this time and for ever.

8For the sake of my brethren, and of my neighbours, I spoke peace of thee.

9(not in this translation)

9Because of the house of the Lord our God, I have sought good things for thee.
