What Mark 5:17 means
Overwhelmed by the dramatic display of Jesus' power and perhaps by the economic loss from the pigs, the local inhabitants began to plead with Jesus to depart from their region. Their fear and discomfort with such immense spiritual authority, and possibly the disruption to their lives, outweighed any gratitude for the man's deliverance. This highlights their preference for their familiar circumstances over the presence of divine power.

Context
This verse reveals the surprising and negative reaction of the Gerasene community to Jesus' power. Their request for Him to leave contrasts sharply with the man's healing, setting the stage for Jesus' departure and the new convert's commission to evangelize his own people.
