Mark 2

1And when he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was noised that he was in the house.

1A few days later, Jesus went back to Capernaum, and word spread that he was at home.

2And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, no, not even about the door: and he spake the word unto them.

2So many people gathered that there was no more room, not even outside the door, and he preached the message to them.

3And they come, bringing unto him a man sick of the palsy, borne of four.

3Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man to Jesus.

4And when they could not come nigh unto him for the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed whereon the sick of the palsy lay.

4Since they could not get him near Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where he was. After digging through it, they lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.

5And Jesus seeing their faith saith unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins are forgiven.

5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.'

6But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

6Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,

7Why doth this man thus speak? he blasphemeth: who can forgive sins but one, even God?

7'Why does this man talk like this? He is insulting God! Who can forgive sins but God alone?'

8And straightway Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, saith unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

8Right away, Jesus knew in his spirit that they were thinking this. He asked them, 'Why are you questioning these things in your hearts?

9Which is easier, to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

9Which is easier: to say to the paralyzed man, "Your sins are forgiven," or to say, "Get up, pick up your mat, and walk"?

10But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins (he saith to the sick of the palsy),

10But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.' So he said to the paralyzed man,

11I say unto thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thy house.

11'I tell you, get up, take your mat, and go home.'

12And he arose, and straightway took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

12The man got up, immediately picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone. They were all amazed and praised God, saying, 'We have never seen anything like this!'

13And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

13Jesus went out again beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.

14And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphæus sitting at the place of toll, and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

14As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. 'Follow me,' Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

15And it came to pass, that he was sitting at meat in his house, and many publicans and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

15While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.

16And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and publicans, said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

16When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples, 'Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?'

17And when Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.

17On hearing this, Jesus said to them, 'Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I did not come to call those who think they are righteous, but to call sinners.'

18And John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting: and they come and say unto him, Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

18Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, 'How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?'

19And Jesus said unto them, Can the sons of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

19Jesus answered, 'How can the guests of the groom fast while he is with them? They cannot fast as long as they have the groom with them.

20But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then will they fast in that day.

20But the time will come when the groom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

21No man seweth a piece of undressed cloth on an old garment: else that which should fill it up taketh from it, the new from the old, and a worse rent is made.

21No one sews a patch of new, unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If they do, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.

22And no man putteth new wine into old wine-skins; else the wine will burst the skins, and the wine perisheth, and the skins: but they put new wine into fresh wine-skins.

22And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.'

23And it came to pass, that he was going on the sabbath day through the grainfields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears.

23One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.

24And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

24The Pharisees said to him, 'Look, why are they doing what is illegal on the Sabbath?'

25And he said unto them, Did ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him?

25He answered, 'Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

26How he entered into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the showbread, which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests, and gave also to them that were with him?

26In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the sacred bread, which only priests are allowed to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.'

27And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

27Then he said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.

28so that the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.

28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.'
