What Matthew 4:9 means

The devil revealed his ultimate demand, offering Jesus all the displayed power and glory of the world's kingdoms, but only if Jesus would abandon His loyalty to God and worship the devil instead. This was a direct assault on Jesus' allegiance and status as the Son of God, a blatant attempt to usurp divine authority and tempt Jesus with a shortcut to universal dominion without the path of the cross.

Context

This verse contains the devil's direct proposition, immediately following the spectacular display of all the world's kingdoms. This is the culmination of the temptations, a clear demand for worship directly challenging Jesus' divine sonship. Jesus' impending response will therefore be a definitive declaration of His unwavering allegiance to God and a full rebuke of the devil's authority.

v.8Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

v.9This passage

v.10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
