Matthew 27

1Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death.

1And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death;

2And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler.

2and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

3Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority,

3Then Judas--he who delivered him up--having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silverlings to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying,

4Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business.

4`I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;' and they said, `What--to us? thou shalt see!'

5And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging.

5and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself.

6And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood.

6And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;'

7And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries.

7and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers;

8For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day.

8therefore was that field called, `Field of blood,' unto this day.

9Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel;

9Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, `And I took the thirty silverlings, the price of him who hath been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel did price,

10And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord.

10and gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord did appoint to me.'

11And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so.

11And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor did question him, saying, `Art thou the king of the Jews!' And Jesus said to him, `Thou sayest.'

12But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.

12And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not answer any thing,

13Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?

13then saith Pilate to him, `Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?'

14And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised.

14And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor did wonder greatly.

15Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection.

15And at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,

16And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas.

16and they had then a noted prisoner, called Barabbas,

17So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ?

17they therefore having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, `Whom will ye I shall release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?'

18For he saw that for envy they had given him up.

18for he had known that because of envy they had delivered him up.

19And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.

19And as he is sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent unto him, saying, `Nothing--to thee and to that righteous one, for many things did I suffer to-day in a dream because of him.'

20Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.

20And the chief priests and the elders did persuade the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;

21But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas.

21and the governor answering said to them, `Which of the two will ye <FI>that<Fi> I shall release to you?' And they said, `Barabbas.'

22Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross.

22Pilate saith to them, `What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all say to him, `Let be crucified!'

23And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him!

23And the governor said, `Why, what evil did he?' and they were crying out the more, saying, `Let be crucified.'

24So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible.

24And Pilate having seen that it profiteth nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he did wash the hands before the multitude, saying, `I am innocent from the blood of this righteous one; ye--ye shall see;'

25And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children.

25and all the people answering said, `His blood <FI>is<Fi> upon us, and upon our children!'

26Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross.

26Then did he release to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered <FI>him<Fi> up that he may be crucified;

27Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together.

27then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, did gather to him all the band;

28And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe.

28and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,

29And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews.

29and having plaited him a crown out of thorns they put <FI>it<Fi> on his head, and a reed in his right hand, and having kneeled before him, they were mocking him, saying, `Hail, the king of the Jews.'

30And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod.

30And having spit on him, they took the reed, and were smiting on his head;

31And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross.

31and when they had mocked him, they took off from him the cloak, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify <FI>him<Fi> .

32And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross.

32And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: him they impressed that he might bear his cross;

33And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head,

33and having come to a place called Golgotha, that is called Place of a Skull,

34They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more.

34they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted, he would not drink.

35And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.

35And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the prophet, `They divided my garments to themselves, and over my vesture they cast a lot;'

36And they were seated there watching him.

36and sitting down, they were watching him there,

37And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

37and they put up over his head, his accusation written, `This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.'

38Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left.

38Then crucified with him are two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on the left,

39And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying,

39and those passing by were speaking evil of him, wagging their heads,

40You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

40and saying, `Thou that art throwing down the sanctuary, and in three days building <FI>it<Fi> , save thyself; if Son thou art of God, come down from the cross.'

41In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said,

41And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,

42A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him.

42`Others he saved; himself he is not able to save! If he be King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe him;

43He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.

43he hath trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said--Son of God I am;'

44And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him.

44with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with him, were reproaching him.

45Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.

45And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land unto the ninth hour,

46And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?

46and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, `Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'

47And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah.

47And certain of those standing there having heard, said--`Elijah he doth call;'

48And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink.

48and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a spunge, having filled <FI>it<Fi> with vinegar, and having put <FI>it<Fi> on a reed, was giving him to drink,

49And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help.

49but the rest said, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come--about to save him.'

50And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit.

50And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;

51And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken;

51and lo, the vail of the sanctuary was rent in two from top unto bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent,

52And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life;

52and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who have fallen asleep, arose,

53And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people.

53and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

54Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God.

54And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, `Truly this was God's Son.'

55And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs.

55And there were there many women beholding from afar, who did follow Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,

56Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

57And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus:

57And evening having come, there came a rich man, from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,

58This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him.

58he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.

59And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen,

59And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,

60And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away.

60and laid it in his new tomb, that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;

61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead.

61and there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over-against the sepulchre.

62Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,

62And on the morrow that is after the preparation, were gathered together the chief priests, and the Pharisees, unto Pilate,

63Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead.

63saying, `Sir, we have remembered that that deceiver said while yet living, After three days I do rise;

64Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.

64command, then, the sepulchre to be made secure till the third day, lest his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit shall be worse than the first.'

65Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able.

65And Pilate said to them, `Ye have a watch, go away, make secure--as ye have known;'

66So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them.

66and they, having gone, did make the sepulchre secure, having sealed the stone, together with the watch.
