Matthew 23

1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,

2saying, The scribes and the Pharisees have set themselves down in Moses' seat:

2Saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses.

2saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;

3all things therefore, whatever they may tell you, do and keep. But do not after their works, for they say and do not,

3All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not. For they say, and do not.

3all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;

4but bind burdens heavy and hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but will not move them with their finger.

4For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders: but with a finger of their own they will not move them.

4for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.

5And all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders [of their garments],

5And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge their fringes.

5`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,

6and love the chief place in feasts and the first seats in the synagogues,

6they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

7and salutations in the market-places, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8But ye, be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor, and all ye are brethren.

9And call not [any one] your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, he who is in the heavens.

9and ye may not call <FI>any<Fi> your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,

10Neither be called instructors, for one is your instructor, the Christ.

10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, Christ.

10nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director--the Christ.

11But the greatest of you shall be your servant.

11He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.

11And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,

12And whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens before men; for ye do not enter, nor do ye suffer those that are entering to go in.

13But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for you yourselves do not enter in and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter.

13`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.

14

14Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour the houses of widows, praying long prayers. For this you shall receive the greater judgment.

14`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.

15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye compass the sea and the dry [land] to make one proselyte, and when he is become [such], ye make him twofold more [the] son of hell than yourselves.

15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte. And when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves.

15`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen--ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.

16Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.

16Woe to you, blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple is a debtor.

16`Woe to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary--is debtor!

17Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold, or the temple which sanctifies the gold?

17Ye foolish and blind: for whether is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

17Fools and blind! for which <FI>is<Fi> greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?

18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor.

18And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor.

18`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it--is debtor!

19[Fools and] blind ones, for which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifies the gift?

19Ye foolish and blind: for whether is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

19Fools and blind! for which <FI>is<Fi> greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?

20He therefore that swears by the altar swears by it and by all things that are upon it.

20He therefore that sweareth by the altar sweareth by it and by all things that are upon it.

20`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;

21And he that swears by the temple swears by it and by him that dwells in it.

21And whosoever shall swear by the temple sweareth by it and by him that dwelleth in it.

21and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;

22And he that swears by heaven swears by the throne ofGod and by him that sits upon it.

22And he that sweareth by heaven sweareth by the throne of God and by him that sitteth thereon.

22and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.

23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye pay tithes of mint and anise and cummin, and ye have left aside the weightier matters of the law, judgment and mercy and faith: these ye ought to have done and not have left those aside.

23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint and anise and cummin and have left the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and faith. These things you ought to have done and not to leave those undone.

23`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law--the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved <FI>you<Fi> to do, and those not to neglect.

24Blind guides, who strain out the gnat, but drink down the camel.

24Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.

24`Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.

25Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance.

25Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness.

25`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.

26Blind Pharisee, make clean first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that their outside also may become clean.

26Thou blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean.

26`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.

27Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye are like whited sepulchres, which appear beautiful outwardly, but within are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.

27Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear to men beautiful but within are full of dead men's bones and of all filthiness.

27`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;

28Thus also ye, outwardly ye appear righteous to men, but within are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

28So you also outwardly indeed appear to men just: but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

28so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the tombs of the just,

29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, that build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just,

29`Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,

30and ye say, If we had been in the days of our fathers we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31So that ye bear witness of yourselves that ye are sons of those who slew the prophets:

32and ye, fill ye up the measure of your fathers.

33Serpents, offspring of vipers, how should ye escape the judgment of hell?

33You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of hell?

33`Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

34Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and [some] of them ye will kill and crucify, and [some] of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will persecute from city to city;

34Therefore behold I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify: and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city.

34`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;

35so that all righteous blood shed upon the earth should come upon you, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

35That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.

35that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:

36Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

36Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.

37Jerusalem, Jerusalem, [the city] that kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto her, how often would I have gathered thy children as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

37Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldst not?

37`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.

38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate;

38Behold, your house shall be left to you, desolate.

38Lo, left desolate to you is your house;

39for I say unto you, Ye shall in no wise see me henceforth until ye say, Blessed [be] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord.

39For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth till you say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

39for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed <FI>is<Fi> he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'
