Matthew 15

1Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,

2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

3And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

3And in answer he said to them, Why do you, yourselves, go against the word of God on account of the teaching which has been handed down to you?

4For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death.

4Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death.

4For God said, Give honour to your father and mother: and, He who says evil of father or mother will be put to death.

5But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God;

5But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee.

5But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is given to God;

6he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition.

6And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition.

6There is no need for him to give honour to his father. And you have made the word of God without effect because of your teaching.

7Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

7You false ones, well did Isaiah say of you,

8 This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.

8This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.

8These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

9But in vain do they worship me, Teachingas theirdoctrines the precepts of men.

9And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.

9But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men.

10And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

11Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.

11Not that which goes into the mouth makes a man unclean, but that which comes out of the mouth.

12Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?

12Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized?

12Then the disciples came and said to him, Did you see that the Pharisees were troubled when these words came to their ears?

13But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up.

13But he answering, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

13But he said in answer, Every plant which my Father in heaven has not put in the earth, will be taken up by the roots.

14Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit.

14Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both fall into the pit.

14Let them be: they are blind guides. And if a blind man is guiding a blind man, the two will go falling into a hole together.

15And Peter answered and said unto him, Declare unto us the parable.

15And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable.

15Then Peter said to him, Make the story clear to us.

16And he said, Are ye also even yet without understanding?

16And he said, Are you, like them, still without wisdom?

17Perceive ye not, that whatsoever goeth into the mouth passeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

17Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy?

17Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth goes on into the stomach, and is sent out as waste?

18But the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man.

18But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man.

18But the things which come out of the mouth come from the heart; and they make a man unclean.

19For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings:

19For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.

19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, the taking of life, broken faith between the married, unclean desires of the flesh, taking of property, false witness, bitter words:

20these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not the man.

20These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.

20These are the things which make a man unclean; but to take food with unwashed hands does not make a man unclean.

21And Jesus went out thence, and withdrew into the parts of Tyre and Sidon.

21And Jesus went from thence, and retired into the coast of Tyre and Sidon.

22And behold, a Canaanitish woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon.

22And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grievously troubled by a devil.

22And a woman of Canaan came out from those parts, crying and saying, Have pity on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is greatly troubled with an unclean spirit.

23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

23Who answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for she crieth after us:

23But he gave her no answer. And his disciples came and said to him, Send her away, for she is crying after us.

24But he answered and said, I was not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

24And he answering, said: I was not sent but to the sheep, that are lost of the house of Israel.

24But he made answer and said, I was sent only to the wandering sheep of the house of Israel.

25But she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

25But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me.

25But she came and gave him worship, saying, Help, Lord.

26And he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread and cast it to the dogs.

26Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs.

26And he made answer and said, It is not right to take the children's bread and give it to the dogs.

27But she said, Yea, Lord: for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

27But she said: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.

27But she said, Yes, Lord: but even the dogs take the bits from under their masters' table.

28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it done unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

28Then Jesus answering, said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it done to thee as thou wilt: and her daughter was cured from that hour.

28Then Jesus, answering, said to her, O woman, great is your faith: let your desire be done. And her daughter was made well from that hour.

29And Jesus departed thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there.

29And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee: and going up into a mountain, he sat there.

29And Jesus went from there and came to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and took his seat there.

30And there came unto him great multitudes, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and they cast them down at his feet; and he healed them:

30And there came to him great numbers of people having with them those who were broken in body, or blind, or without voice, or wounded, or ill in any way, and a number of others; they put them down at his feet and he made them well:

31insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they glorified the God of Israel.

31So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

31So that the people were full of wonder when they saw that those who had no voice were talking, the feeble were made strong, those whose bodies were broken had the power of walking, and the blind were able to see: and they gave glory to the God of Israel.

32And Jesus called unto him his disciples, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat: and I would not send them away fasting, lest haply they faint on the way.

32And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

32And Jesus got his disciples together and said, I have pity for the people, because they have now been with me three days and have no food: and I will not send them away without food, or they will have no strength for the journey.

33And the disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so many loaves in a desert place as to fill so great a multitude?

34And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few small fishes.

35And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;

36and he took the seven loaves and the fishes; and he gave thanks and brake, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

36And he took the seven cakes of bread and the fishes; and having given praise, he gave the broken bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people.

37And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, seven baskets full.
