Matthew 10

1And he called unto him his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of disease and all manner of sickness.

1Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them power to drive out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and sickness.

2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James thesonof Zebedee, and John his brother;

2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee;

3Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Thaddæus;

3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

4Simon the Cananæan, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

4Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus.

5These twelve Jesus sent forth, and charged them, saying, Go not into any way of the Gentiles, and enter not into any city of the Samaritans:

5Jesus sent these twelve out with these instructions: 'Do not go to the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.

6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

6Instead, go to the lost sheep of the people of Israel.

7And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

7As you go, announce this message: The kingdom of heaven is near.

8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons: freely ye received, freely give.

8Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, heal those with leprosy, and drive out demons. Give freely to others, just as you have received freely.

9Get you no gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses;

9Do not take any gold, silver, or copper coins in your money belts.

10no wallet for your journey, neither two coats, nor shoes, nor staff: for the laborer is worthy of his food.

10Do not take a traveler's bag, or an extra shirt, or sandals, or a walking stick; for a worker deserves to be fed.

11And into whatsoever city or village ye shall enter, search out who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go forth.

11Whenever you enter a city or village, look for a trustworthy person and stay at their house until you leave town.

12And as ye enter into the house, salute it.

12When you enter a home, give it your blessing.

13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

13If the home is worthy, let your blessing of peace rest on it; if it is not, take your blessing back.

14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet.

14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or town.

15Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

15I tell you the truth, it will be better for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

16Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore, be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

17But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you;

17Watch out for people; they will hand you over to the local councils and whip you in their synagogues.

18yea and before governors and kings shall ye be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

18You will be brought before governors and kings because of me, to tell them and the non-Jewish people about the truth.

19But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak.

19When they arrest you, do not worry about how to speak or what to say. At that time, the right words will be given to you.

20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.

20For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

21And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child: and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.

21A brother will hand over his brother to be killed, and a father will do the same to his child. Children will turn against their parents and have them put to death.

22And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.

22Everyone will hate you because of me, but the person who stands firm to the end will be saved.

23But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone through the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his lord.

24A student is not better than his teacher, and a servant is not better than his master.

25It is enough for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household!

25It is enough for a student to be like his teacher and a servant to be like his master. If people have called the head of the house Beelzebul, they will say even worse things about the members of his household!

26Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

26So do not be afraid of them. Everything that is covered up will be revealed, and every secret will be made known.

27What I tell you in the darkness, speak ye in the light; and what ye hear in the ear, proclaim upon the house-tops.

27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, shout it from the housetops.

28And be not afraid of them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father:

29Aren't two sparrows sold for only a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father knowing it.

30but the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

30And even the hairs on your head are all numbered.

31Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

31So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.碎

32Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven.

32If anyone acknowledges me publicly before others, I will also acknowledge them before my Father in heaven.

33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.

33But whoever denies me publicly before others, I will also deny them before my Father in heaven.

34Think not that I came to send peace on the earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

34Do not think that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

35For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law:

35I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

36and a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

36A person’s enemies will be the members of their own family.

37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

37Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38And he that doth not take his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.

38Anyone who does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

39He that findeth his life shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

39Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.碎

40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

40Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

41He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward: and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

41Whoever welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. And whoever welcomes a righteous person because he is righteous will receive a righteous person's reward.

42And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you he shall in no wise lose his reward.

42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because they are my disciple, I tell you the truth, that person will certainly be rewarded.
