What Luke 24:52 means
In response, they worship Him and return to Jerusalem with great joy. Worship directed to Jesus affirms His divine status; the resurrection and ascension have clarified His identity beyond doubt. Joy replaces fear and confusion, proving that His departure is not loss but gain. They obey His instruction to remain in the city, demonstrating faith that waits. True encounter with the risen, exalted Christ produces adoration and cheerful submission. Their journey back to Jerusalem is no longer retreat but readiness, hearts buoyed by blessing and promise, poised for the Spirit’s coming and the world’s hearing.

Context
After Jesus is carried up into heaven (v. 51), verse 52 records the disciples’ transformed posture: they worship and rejoice while returning to the place of waiting He appointed. This prepares the closing note in verse 53—their continual presence in the temple, blessing God. The progression from fear to understanding to mission readiness is complete. The chapter’s end thus functions as a bridge to Acts, where joy, worship, and obedience will mark the community as they receive power from on high.
