What Luke 24:35 means

They recount what happened on the road and how Jesus was known to them in the breaking of the bread. Their testimony centers on two anchors: the opening of the Scriptures and the recognition at the table. They do not magnify themselves but the Lord’s initiative and grace. The phrase “known of them in the breaking of the bread” becomes a lasting memory for the church—a reminder that Jesus reveals Himself as He feeds His people with truth and fellowship. Their account adds texture to the community’s growing certainty: this is not a phantom or a hope-dream, but the same Jesus engaging His disciples personally.

Context

Following the assembly’s report of Jesus’ appearance to Simon (v. 34), the two travelers add their story (v. 35). Together, these accounts form the immediate backdrop for Jesus’ sudden appearance to the entire group in verse 36. The narrative rhythm has moved from empty tomb to angelic message to scattered sightings and Scripture-based recognition. Now the stage is set for unequivocal, bodily confirmation, as Jesus stands in their midst, speaks peace, shows His wounds, and even eats in front of them (vv. 36–43).

v.34saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

v.35This passage

v.36And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
