1And entering he walked through Jericho.
1And he went into Jericho, and when he was going through it,
2And behold, there was a man named Zacheus, who was the chief of the publicans: and he was rich.
2A man, named Zacchaeus, who was the chief tax-farmer, and a man of wealth,
3And he sought to see Jesus who he was: and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature.
3Made an attempt to get a view of Jesus, and was not able to do so, because of the people, for he was a small man.
4And running before, he climbed up into a sycamore tree, that he might see him: for he was to pass that way.
4And he went quickly in front of them and got up into a tree to see him, for he was going that way.
5And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up, he saw him and said to him: Zacheus, make haste and come down: for this day I must abide in thy house.
5And when Jesus came to the place, looking up, he said to him, Zacchaeus, be quick and come down, for I am coming to your house today.
6And he made haste and came down and received him with joy.
6And he came down quickly, and took him into his house with joy.
7And when all saw it, they murmured, saying, that he was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner.
7And when they saw it, they were all angry, saying, He has gone into the house of a sinner.
8But Zacheus standing, said to the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wronged any man of any thing, I restore him fourfold.
8And Zacchaeus, waiting before him, said to the Lord, See, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have taken anything from anyone wrongly, I give him back four times as much.
9Jesus said to him: This day is salvation come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham.
9And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, for even he is a son of Abraham.
10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
10For the Son of man came to make search for those who are wandering from the way, and to be their Saviour.
11As they were hearing these things, he added and spoke a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately be manifested.
11And while they were giving ear to these words, he made another story for them, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they were of the opinion that the kingdom of God was coming straight away.
12He said therefore: a certain nobleman went into a far country, to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.
12So he said, A certain man of high birth went into a far-away country to get a kingdom for himself, and to come back.
13And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds and said to them: Trade till I come.
13And he sent for ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds and said to them, Do business with this till I come.
14But his citizens hated him and they sent an embassage after him, saying: We will not have this man to reign over us.
14But his people had no love for him, and sent representatives after him, saying, We will not have this man for our ruler.
15And it came to pass that he returned, having received the kingdom: and he commanded his servants to be called, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading,
15And when he came back again, having got his kingdom, he gave orders for those servants to whom he had given the money to come to him, so that he might have an account of what business they had done.
16And the first came saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
16And the first came before him, saying, Lord, your pound has made ten pounds.
17And he said to him: Well done, thou good servant, because thou hast been faithful in a little, thou shalt have power over ten cities.
17And he said to him, You have done well, O good servant: because you have done well in a small thing you will have authority over ten towns.
18And the second came, saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
18And another came, saying, Your pound has made five pounds.
19And he said to him: Be thou also over five cities.
19And he said, You will be ruler over five towns.
20And another came, saying: Lord, behold here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin.
20And another came, saying, Lord, here is your pound, which I put away in a cloth;
21For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up what thou didst not lay down: and thou reapest that which thou didst not sow.
21Because I was in fear of you, for you are a hard man: you take up what you have not put down, and get in grain where you have not put seed.
22He saith to him: Out of thy own mouth I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up what I laid not down and reaping that which I did not sow.
22He said to him, By the words of your mouth you will be judged, you bad servant. You had knowledge that I am a hard man, taking up what I have not put down and getting in grain where I have not put seed;
23And why then didst thou not give my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have exacted it with usury?
23Why then did you not put my money in a bank, so that when I came I would get it back with interest?
24And he said to them that stood by: Take the pound away from him and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
24And he said to the others who were near, Take the pound away from him, and give it to the man who has ten.
26But I say to you that to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall abound: and from him that hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken from him.
26And I say to you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
27But as for those my enemies, who would not have me reign over them, bring them hither and kill them before me.
27And as for those who were against me, who would not have me for their ruler, let them come here, and be put to death before me.
28And having said these things, he went before, going up to Jerusalem.
28And when he had said this, he went on in front of them, going up to Jerusalem.
29And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethania, unto the mount called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples,
29And it came about that when he got near Beth-phage and Bethany by the mountain which is named the Mountain of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
30Saying: Go into the town which is over against you, at your entering into which you shall find the colt of an ass tied, on which no man ever hath sitten: loose him and bring him hither.
30Saying, Go into the little town in front of you, and on going in you will see a young ass fixed with a cord, on which no man has ever been seated; let him loose and take him.
31And if any man shall ask you: Why do you loose him? You shall say thus unto him: Because the Lord hath need of his service.
31And if anyone says to you, Why are you taking him? say, The Lord has need of him.
32And they that were sent went their way and found the colt standing, as he said unto them.
32And those whom he sent went away, and it was as he said.
33And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said to them: Why loose you the colt?
33And when they were getting the young ass, the owners of it said to them, Why are you taking the young ass?
35And they brought him to Jesus. And casting their garments on the colt, they set Jesus thereon.
35And they took him to Jesus, and they put their clothing on the ass, and Jesus got on to him.
36And as he went, they spread their clothes underneath in the way.
36And while he went on his way they put their clothing down on the road in front of him.
37And when he was now coming near the descent of Mount Olivet, the whole multitude of his disciples began with joy to praise God with a loud voice, for all the mighty works they had seen,
37And when he came near the foot of the Mountain of Olives, all the disciples with loud voices gave praise to God with joy, because of all the great works which they had seen;
38Saying: Blessed be the king who cometh in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory on high!
38Saying, A blessing on the King who comes in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest.
39And some of the Pharisees, from amongst the multitude, said to him: Master, rebuke thy disciples.
39And some of the Pharisees among the people said to him, Master, make your disciples be quiet.
40To whom he said: I say to you that if these shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.
40And he said in answer, I say to you, if these men keep quiet, the very stones will be crying out.
41And when he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying:
41And when he got near and saw the town, he was overcome with weeping for it,
42If thou also hadst known, and that in this thy day, the things that are to thy peace: but now they are hidden from thy eyes.
42Saying, If you, even you, had knowledge today, of the things which give peace! but you are not able to see them.
43For the days shall come upon thee: and thy enemies shall cast a trench about thee and compass thee round and straiten thee on every side,
43For the time will come when your attackers will put a wall round you, and come all round you and keep you in on every side,
44And beat thee flat to the ground, and thy children who are in thee. And they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone: because thou hast not known the time of thy visitation.
44And will make you level with the earth, and your children with you; and there will not be one stone resting on another in you, because you did not see that it was your day of mercy.
45And entering into the temple, he began to cast out them that sold therein and them that bought.
45And he went into the Temple and put out those who were trading there,
46Saying to them: It is written: My house is the house of prayer. But you have made it a den of thieves.
46Saying to them, It has been said, My house is to be a house of prayer, but you have made it a hole of thieves.
