What Luke 14:25 means

Great multitudes travel with Jesus, but He turns and speaks plainly to them. He is not flattered by numbers; He seeks true disciples, not fans. Popularity can mask shallow commitment. Jesus loves the crowds enough to warn them that following Him costs everything. By arresting the momentum and addressing them directly, He prepares to state hard conditions—allegiance beyond family ties, self-denial to the point of carrying a cross, and sober calculation of the costs. Discipleship is not a casual add-on to life; it is a reorientation around Jesus as Lord.

Context

Following the parable’s warning about refusing the feast, this verse introduces a new section on the cost of discipleship. The transition from banquet imagery to marching crowds bridges grace and commitment: the free invitation leads to a demanding path. Verses 26–27 will state the stark requirements of allegiance and cross-bearing. Verses 28–32 will use images of building and warfare to urge counting the cost, and verses 33–35 will conclude with renunciation of all and the salt saying.

v.24For I say unto you, that none of those men that were bidden shall taste of my supper.

v.25This passage

v.26If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
