1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ:
1From Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, to those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept safe for Jesus Christ:
2Mercy unto you and peace and love be multiplied.
2May mercy, peace, and love be given to you in greater and greater measure.
3Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.
3Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we all share, I felt I had to write and urge you to fight hard for the faith that God gave once and for all to his holy people.
4For there are certain men crept in privily, even they who were of old written of beforehand unto this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
4For certain people have slipped in among you unnoticed. Long ago, the Scriptures warned about these ungodly people and their condemnation. They trade the grace of our God for an excuse to be immoral, and they reject our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
5Now I desire to put you in remembrance, though ye know all things once for all, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
5I want to remind you—even though you already know this well—that although the Lord once rescued his people from the land of Egypt, he later destroyed those who did not believe.
6And angels that kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
6And remember the angels who did not stay within their own limits of authority but abandoned their proper home. God has kept them in eternal chains in deep darkness, waiting for the judgment of the great day.
7Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.
7It is the same with Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns. They gave themselves over to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
8Yet in like manner these also in their dreamings defile the flesh, and set at nought dominion, and rail at dignities.
8In the same way, these people among you follow their own dreams to pollute their bodies, reject authority, and insult heavenly beings.
9But Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing judgment, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
9But even Michael the archangel, when he was arguing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him. He simply said, 'The Lord rebuke you.'
10But these rail at whatsoever things they know not: and what they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason, in these things are they destroyed.
10But these people insult whatever they do not understand. Like irrational animals, they are destroyed by the very things they do by instinct.
11Woe unto them! for they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.
11How terrible it will be for them! They have followed the path of Cain; they have rushed greedily into Balaam's error for money; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.
12These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
12These people are like dangerous reefs at your fellowship meals, eating with you without any fear, caring only for themselves. They are like clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; they are like trees in autumn without fruit, pulled up by the roots and dead twice over.
13wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.
13They are like wild waves of the sea, churning up the foam of their own shameful deeds. They are like wandering stars, for whom the deepest darkness has been reserved forever.
14And to these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones,
14Enoch, who was the seventh descendant from Adam, prophesied about these people when he said, 'Look, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones,
15to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness which they have ungodly wrought, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
15to judge everyone and to convict all the ungodly for all the ungodly acts they have done in their ungodliness, and for all the harsh words that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.'
16These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their lusts (and their mouth speaketh great swelling words), showing respect of persons for the sake of advantage.
16These people are grumblers and complainers who follow their own evil desires. They brag about themselves and flatter others just to get what they want.
17But ye, beloved, remember ye the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
17But you, dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ predicted.
18that they said to you, In the last time there shall be mockers, walking after their own ungodly lusts.
18They told you, 'In the last times there will be scoffers who follow their own ungodly desires.'
19These are they who make separations, sensual, having not the Spirit.
19These are the people who cause divisions. They are worldly people who do not have the Spirit.
20But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
20But you, dear friends, must build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the power of the Holy Spirit.
21keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
21Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, which leads to eternal life.
23and some save, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
23Save others by snatching them out of the fire. To others, show mercy mixed with fear, hating even the clothes stained by their corrupt worldly lives.
