1And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.

1But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple: and all the people came to him. And sitting down he taught them.

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.

3And the scribes and Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,

3And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery.

4they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery.

5Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou?

5Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou?

6And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.

6But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground.

7When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

7But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.

8And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.

8And again stooping down he wrote on the ground.

9But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.

9But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there.

10Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?

10And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee?

11Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.

11And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

12Again therefore, Jesus spoke to: them, saying: I am the light of the world. He that followeth me walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

12Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

13The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself. Thy testimony is not true.

13The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true.

14Jesus answered and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came and whither I go.

14Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.

15You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.

15Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.

16And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

16And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me.

17And in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true.

17And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:

18I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.

18I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.

19They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.

19They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father.

20These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

20These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come.

21Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go: and you shall seek me. And you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.

21He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come.

22The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go you cannot come?

22The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come?

23And he said to them: You are from beneath: I am from above. You are of this world: I am not of this world.

23And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

24Therefore I said to you that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.

24I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.

25They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.

25They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you.

26Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.

26I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.

27And they understood not that he called God his Father.

27They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father.

28Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up, the Son of man, then shall you know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself. But as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak.

28Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things.

29And he that sent me is with me: and he hath not left me alone. For I do always the things that please him.

29And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.

30When he spoke these things, many believed in him.

30As he spoke these things many believed on him.

31Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.

31Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;

32And you shall know the truth: and the truth shall make you free.

32and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

33They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham: and we have never been slaves to any man. How sayest thou: You shall be free?

33They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free?

34Jesus answered them: Amen, amen, I say unto you that whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.

35Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the son abideth for ever.

35Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever.

36If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

36If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.

37I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.

38I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father.

38I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.

39They answered and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham.

39They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham;

40But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not.

40but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard fromGod: this did not Abraham.

41You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.

41Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father,God.

42Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded and came. For I came not of myself: but he sent me.

42Jesus said to them, IfGod were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth fromGod and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but he has sent me.

43Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.

43Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word.

44You are of your father the devil: and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning: and he stood not in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

44Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:

45But if I say the truth, you believe me not.

45and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.

46Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me:

46Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?

47He that is of God heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.

47He that is ofGod hears the words ofGod: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not ofGod.

48The Jews therefore answered and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil?

48The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon?

49Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father. And you have dishonoured me.

49Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.

50But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

50But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges.

51Amen, amen, I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.

51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.

52The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets: and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever.

52The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death.

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?

53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself?

54Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.

54Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is ourGod.

55And you have not known him: but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him and do keep his word.

55And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.

56Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it and was glad.

56Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.

57The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old. And hast thou seen Abraham?

57The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I AM.

58Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

59They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]
