1After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee--that is, the sea of Tiberias.
1After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee, [or] of Tiberias,
2And a great number of people went after him because they saw the signs which he did on those who were ill.
2and a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs which he wrought upon the sick.
3Then Jesus went up the mountain and was seated there with his disciples.
3And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there sat with his disciples:
4Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
4but the passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
5Lifting up his eyes, Jesus saw a great number of people coming to where he was, and he said to Philip, Where may we get bread for all these people?
5Jesus then, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great crowd is coming to him, says to Philip, Whence shall we buy loaves that these may eat?
6This he said, testing him: for he had no doubt what he himself would do.
6But this he said trying him, for he knew what he was going to do.
7Philip made answer, Bread to the value of two hundred pence would not be enough even to give everyone a little.
7Philip answered him, Loaves for two hundred denarii are not sufficient for them, that each may have some little [portion].
8One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Jesus,
8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him,
9There is a boy here with five barley cakes and two fishes: but what is that among such a number?
9There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes; but this, what is it for so many?
10Jesus said, Let the people be seated. Now there was much grass in that place. And those seated on the grass were about five thousand.
10[And] Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place: the men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.
11Then Jesus took the cakes and having given praise to God, he gave them to the people who were seated, and the fishes in the same way, as much as they had need of.
11And Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed [them] to those that were set down; and in like manner of the small fishes as much as they would.
12And when they had had enough, Jesus said to his disciples, Take up the broken bits which are over, so that nothing may be wasted.
12And when they had been filled, he says to his disciples, Gather together the fragments which are over and above, that nothing may be lost.
13So they took them up: twelve baskets full of broken bits of the five cakes which were over after the people had had enough.
13They gathered [them] therefore together, and filled twelve hand-baskets full of fragments of the five barley loaves, which were over and above to those that had eaten.
14And when the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, Truly, this is the prophet who is to come into the world.
14The men therefore, having seen the sign which Jesus had done, said, This is truly the prophet which is coming into the world.
15Now when Jesus saw that the people were about to come and take him by force to make him a king, he went away again up the mountain by himself.
15Jesus therefore knowing that they were going to come and seize him, that they might make [him] king, departed again to the mountain himself alone.
16When evening came the disciples went down to the sea;
16But when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea,
17And they took a boat and went across the sea in the direction of Capernaum. By then it was dark and still Jesus had not come to them.
17and having gone on board ship, they went over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not come to them,
18The sea was getting rough because of a strong wind which was blowing.
18and the sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing.
19After they had gone three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near to the boat; and they had great fear.
19Having rowed then about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the ship; and they were frightened.
21Then they readily took him into the boat: and straight away the boat was at the land to which they were going.
21They were willing therefore to receive him into the ship; and immediately the ship was at the land to which they went.
22The day after, the people who were on the other side of the sea saw that only one small boat had been there, that Jesus had not gone in that boat with the disciples, but that the disciples had gone away by themselves.
22On the morrow the crowd which stood on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little ship there except that into which his disciples had got, and that Jesus had not gone with his disciples into the ship, but [that] his disciples had gone away alone;
23Some other boats, however, came from Tiberias near to the place where they had taken the bread after the Lord had given praise.
23(but other little ships out of Tiberias came near to the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks;)
24So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples, they got into those boats and went over to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
24when therefore the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they got into the ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25And when they came across him on the other side of the sea they said, Rabbi, when did you come here?
25And having found him the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when art thou arrived here?
26Jesus, answering them, said, Truly I say to you, You come after me, not because you saw signs, but because you were given the bread and had enough.
26Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me not because ye have seen signs, but because ye have eaten of the loaves and been filled.
27Let your work not be for the food which comes to an end, but for the food which goes on for eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you, for on him has God the Father put his mark.
27Work not [for] the food which perishes, but [for] the food which abides unto life eternal, which the Son of man shall give to you; for him has the Father sealed, [even]God.
28Then they said to him, How may we do the works of God?
28They said therefore to him, What should we do that we may work the works ofGod?
29Jesus, answering, said to them, This is to do the work of God: to have faith in him whom God has sent.
29Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work ofGod, that ye believe on him whom he has sent.
30So they said, What sign do you give us, so that we may see and have faith in you? What do you do?
30They said therefore to him, What sign then doest thou that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31Our fathers had the manna in the waste land, as the Writings say, He gave them bread from heaven.
31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.
32Jesus then said to them, Truly I say to you, What Moses gave you was not the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
32Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, [It is] not Moses that has given you the bread out of heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
33The bread of God is the bread which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.
33For the bread ofGod is he who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.
34Ah, Lord, they said, give us that bread for ever!
34They said therefore to him, Lord, ever give to us this bread.
35And this was the answer of Jesus: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be in need of food, and he who has faith in me will never be in need of drink.
35[And] Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst at any time.
36But it is as I said to you: you have seen me, and still you have no faith.
36But I have said to you, that ye have also seen me and do not believe.
37Whatever the Father gives to me will come to me; and I will not send away anyone who comes to me.
37All that the Father gives me shall come to me, and him that comes to me I will not at all cast out.
38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my pleasure, but the pleasure of him who sent me.
38For I am come down from heaven, not that I should do my will, but the will of him that has sent me.
39And this is the pleasure of him who sent me, that I am not to let out of my hands anything which he has given me, but I am to give it new life on the last day.
39And this is the will of him that has sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day.
40This, I say, is my Father's pleasure, that everyone who sees the Son and has faith in him may have eternal life: and I will take him up on the last day.
40For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and believes on him, should have life eternal; and I will raise him up at the last day.
41Now the Jews said bitter things about Jesus because of his words, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
41The Jews therefore murmured about him, because he said, I am the bread which has come down out of heaven.
42And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have seen? How is it then that he now says, I have come down from heaven?
42And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then does he say, I am come down out of heaven?
43Jesus made answer and said, Do not say things against me, one to another.
43Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44No man is able to come to me if the Father who sent me does not give him the desire to come: and I will take him up from the dead on the last day.
44No one can come to me except the Father who has sent me draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day.
45The writings of the prophets say, And they will all have teaching from God. Everyone whose ears have been open to the teaching of the Father comes to me.
45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught ofGod. Every one that has heard from the Father [himself], and has learned [of him], comes to me;
46Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only he who is from God, he has seen the Father.
46not that any one has seen the Father, except he who is ofGod, he has seen the Father.
47Truly I say to you, He who has faith in me has eternal life.
47Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believes [on me] has life eternal.
49Your fathers took the manna in the waste land--and they are dead.
49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.
50The bread which comes from heaven is such bread that a man may take it for food and never see death.
50This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
51I am the living bread which has come from heaven: if any man takes this bread for food he will have life for ever: and more than this, the bread which I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world.
51I am the living bread which has come down out of heaven: if any one shall have eaten of this bread he shall live for ever; but the bread withal which I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
52Then the Jews had an angry discussion among themselves, saying, How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh for food?
52The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can he give us this flesh to eat?
53Then Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, If you do not take the flesh of the Son of man for food, and if you do not take his blood for drink, you have no life in you.
53Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk his blood, ye have no life in yourselves.
54He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink has eternal life: and I will take him up from the dead at the last day.
54He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up at the last day:
55My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.
55for my flesh is truly food and my blood is truly drink.
56He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink is in me and I in him.
56He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him.
57As the living Father has sent me, and I have life because of the Father, even so he who takes me for his food will have life because of me.
57As the living Father has sent me and I live on account of the Father, he also who eats me shall live also on account of me.
58This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever.
58This is the bread which has come down out of heaven. Not as the fathers ate and died: he that eats this bread shall live for ever.
59Jesus said these things in the Synagogue while he was teaching at Capernaum.
59These things he said in [the] synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.
60Then, hearing this, a number of his disciples said, This is a hard saying; who is able to take in such teaching?
60Many therefore of his disciples having heard [it] said, This word is hard; who can hear it?
61When Jesus became conscious that his disciples were protesting about what he said, he said to them, Does this give you trouble?
61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmur concerning this, said to them, Does this offend you?
62What then will you say if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before?
62If then ye see the Son of man ascending up where he was before?
63The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life.
63It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life.
64But still some of you have no faith. For it was clear to Jesus from the first who they were who had no faith, and who it was who would be false to him.
64But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would deliver him up.
65And he said, This is why I said to you, No man is able to come to me if he is not given the power to do so by the Father.
65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no one can come to me unless it be given to him from the Father.
66Because of what he said, a number of the disciples went back and would no longer go with him.
66From that [time] many of his disciples went away back and walked no more with him.
67So Jesus said to the twelve, Have you a desire to go away?
67Jesus therefore said to the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68Then Simon Peter gave this answer: Lord, to whom are we to go? you have the words of eternal life;
68Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of life eternal;
69And we have faith and are certain that you are the Holy One of God.
69and we have believed and known that thou art the holy one ofGod.
