What John 6:55 means

Jesus states that His flesh is true food and His blood is true drink. Compared to all other sustenance, His sacrificial self-giving alone truly nourishes the soul. Earthly bread can maintain bodily life for a time; only Christ’s offered life feeds us unto eternity. “True” here means ultimate and genuine—what the signs pointed to. This clarifies that the earlier miracle of bread was a shadow; the substance is Christ Himself given for sinners. Receiving Him by faith is not a metaphorical nicety but the only real nourishment for eternal life.

Context

This assertion follows the promise of life and resurrection for those who eat and drink. It deepens the contrast between perishable provision and the enduring food Jesus gives. The next verse unfolds the relational result: those who partake abide in Him and He in them, introducing the theme of mutual indwelling that characterizes true discipleship and prepares for the comparison to His relationship with the Father.

v.54He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

v.55This passage

v.56He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him.
