1These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended.

1I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt.

2They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service toGod;

2They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure.

3and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me.

3They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me.

4But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said [them] unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from [the] beginning, because I was with you.

4I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you.

5But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou?

5But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going?

6But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

6But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things.

7But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you.

7But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

8And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

8And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged:

9of sin, because they do not believe on me;

9Of sin, because they have not faith in me;

10of righteousness, because I go away to [my] Father, and ye behold me no longer;

10Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more;

11of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

11Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now.

12I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now.

13But when he is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming.

13However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come.

14He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce [it] to you.

14He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you.

15All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce [it] to you.

15Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you.

16A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, [because I go away to the Father].

16After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me.

17[Some] of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father?

17So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father?

18They said therefore, What is this which he says [of] the little while? We do not know [of] what he speaks.

18So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us.

19Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me?

19Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me?

20Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy.

20Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

21A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world.

21When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world.

22And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you.

22So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy.

23And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

23And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

24Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

24Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy.

25These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father.

25All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly.

26In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you,

26In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you,

27for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out fromGod.

27For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God.

28I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father.

28I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father.

29His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory.

29His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language.

30Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come fromGod.

30Now we are certain that you have knowledge of all things and have no need for anyone to put questions to you: through this we have faith that you came from God.

31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

31Jesus made answer, Have you faith now?

32Behold, [the] hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, for the Father is with me.

32See, a time is coming, yes, it is now here, when you will go away in all directions, every man to his house, and I will be by myself: but I am not by myself, because the Father is with me.

33These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world.

33I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world.
