1I have said these things to you so that you may not be in doubt.

1`These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled,

2They will put you out of the Synagogues: yes, the time is coming when whoever puts you to death will have the belief that he is doing God's pleasure.

2out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God;

3They will do these things to you because they have not had knowledge of the Father or of me.

3and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.

4I have said these things to you so that when the time comes, what I have said may come to your mind. I did not say them to you at the first, because then I was still with you.

4`But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said <FI>them<Fi> to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you;

5But now I am going to him who sent me; and not one of you says to me, Where are you going?

5and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go?

6But your hearts are full of sorrow because I have said these things.

6but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart.

7But what I am saying is true: my going is for your good: for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

7`But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you;

8And he, when he comes, will make the world conscious of sin, and of righteousness, and of being judged:

8and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment;

9Of sin, because they have not faith in me;

9concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me;

10Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more;

10and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me;

11Of being judged, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

11and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged.

12I have still much to say to you, but you are not strong enough for it now.

12`I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear <FI>them<Fi> now;

13However, when he, the Spirit of true knowledge, has come, he will be your guide into all true knowledge: for his words will not come from himself, but whatever has come to his hearing, that he will say: and he will make clear to you the things to come.

13and when He may come--the Spirit of truth--He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you;

14He will give me glory, because he will take of what is mine, and make it clear to you.

14He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you.

15Everything which the Father has is mine: that is why I say, He will take of what is mine and will make it clear to you.

15`All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you;

16After a little time you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me.

16a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.'

17So some of the disciples said one to another, What is this he is saying, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me? and, I am going to the Father?

17Therefore said <FI>some<Fi> of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?'

18So they said again and again, What is this he is saying, A little time? His words are not clear to us.

18they said then, `What is this he saith--the little while? we have not known what he saith.'

19Jesus saw that they had a desire to put the question to him, so he said to them, Is this what you are questioning one with another, why I said, After a little time, you will see me no longer; and then again, after a little time, you will see me?

19Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?

20Truly I say to you, You will be weeping and sorrowing, but the world will be glad: you will be sad, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

20verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become.

21When a woman is about to give birth she has sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she has given birth to the child, the pain is put out of her mind by the joy that a man has come into the world.

21`The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world.

22So you have sorrow now: but I will see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and no one will take away your joy.

22`And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you,

23And on that day you will put no questions to me. Truly I say to you, Whatever request you make to the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

23and in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you;

24Up to now you have made no request in my name: do so, and it will be answered, so that your hearts may be full of joy.

24till now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

25All this I have said to you in veiled language: but the time is coming when I will no longer say things in veiled language but will give you knowledge of the Father clearly.

25`These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you.

26In that day you will make requests in my name: and I do not say that I will make prayer to the Father for you,

26`In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,

27For the Father himself gives his love to you, because you have given your love to me and have had faith that I came from God.

27for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth;

28I came out from the Father and have come into the world: again, I go away from the world and go to the Father.

28I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.'

29His disciples said, Now you are talking clearly and not in veiled language.

29His disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou;

30Now we are certain that you have knowledge of all things and have no need for anyone to put questions to you: through this we have faith that you came from God.

30now we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.'

31Jesus made answer, Have you faith now?

31Jesus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour,

32See, a time is coming, yes, it is now here, when you will go away in all directions, every man to his house, and I will be by myself: but I am not by myself, because the Father is with me.

32and now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me;

33I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world.

33these things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage--I have overcome the world.'
